Build update:  This is what it looks like after 5 coats of linseed oil / beeswax mix :

More updates soon.  I'm waiting on my tremolo to arrive in the mail...

I'm loving it! That wood really speaks to me. I like the organic low key finish. I think this is perfect for black korina. Keep up the great work  :icon_thumright:

Carin makes singles with 11 poles or blades, but humbuckers are 22 screw polepieces only.

Pickups are Bill & Becky Lawrence L-90's.

Agree with you on the black switch tip, but Callaham doesn't offer one.  The pickup switch will be white also, so they'll be some symmetry there...

So last night I took the knobs and switches and placed them on the guitar to figure out where I wanted to drill the holes.  I measured, made a template, and got out the drill.  Fortunately, then, I had the bright idea to screw in the tremolo arm before drilling...and discovered a big problem.

The arm didn't clear the controls.

Never noticed that on my other Warmoth, 'cause it has a Wilkinson trem which sits higher.  And now I know why Strats have that funky control layout and low knobs.  Leo Fender...smart guy.  But here I am, with nice chrome tele style knobs that don't fit.

To make a long story short I bent the arm in a vise to give it a bit more clearance and rearranged the controls to sort of hug the outer edge of the guitar.  Funny angles...it took an hour's fussing to get something functional and eye-pleasing.  Hope I can get it accurately onto the drilling template.  Like I said, funny angles.  So glad i didn't order the body with drilled control holes!

Let this be a lesson, or a good laugh, for someone.

Lefty bridge a la SRV might work because the arm has raised off of the body by the time it gets down that low, or a Gilmour or Beck shorty trem arm could do the trick.

This is kind of unrelated, but does deal with a trem arm being obstructed.  The only Floyd I ever had couldn't make a full revolution sometimes because it couldn't clear some of the fine tuners.

It's God's way of telling you to stop using the whammy.

Leo was actually more of an electronics guy than a mechanical guy, which is why some of his design decisions make less sense than one might expect from such successful and long-running product lines. The "vintage" Fender vibrato bridge you see on Strats is a good example of that, as is the Rube Goldberg lash-up used on Jaguars and Jazzmasters. Not that the Tele bridge is anything to write home about, but that was designed for the low-budget guitar player in the first place, so compromises were to be expected.

Well I got my nice chrome controls in.  I had to route the edges of the control cavity to do it.  Ever route with a dremel?  :-\  But the outside of the guitar looks fine.

Up next- the wiring, then the neck goes on.  I'm so excited...

Sorry for the long update delay.  I took some chances with the neck I ordered with it.  It's an all Pao Ferro neck, standard thin, 1 3/4" nut, 6105 stainless steel frets.  The guitar sounds great at high gain - thick and well defined- but the clean tone is weird and has a piercing top end.  The neck, I think, is just not a good match for the korina body.  It's also fatiguing my hands and wrist more quickly than my other guitars.  The neck, she's sexy, but hard to live with.

To tame the brightness and playing comfort issues, I ordered another neck (Goncalo Alves / Pao Ferro, 59 roundback w/ non-SS medium jumbo frets) from the showcase.  That should help a lot.
