Ash Strat

I'm thinking of getting an Ash solidbody strat w/ Maple neck / Indian Rosewood fingerboard.

I keep hearing that Ash is a sizzly high end sounding wood. Does anyone have an experience with Ash bodies?

I have a solidbody strat alder/maple top & maple fingerboard that is quit bright, especially with the Dimarzio Area 67s & 61 in it.

that is a bit of a crazy statement..
Ash/Maple is what most (US) strats were (or are) made off, either that or Alder. Ash would be similar to alder, probably a little tighter

Wherever you "keep reading" that Ash is "sizzly high end sounding", you should probably not go there anymore.  :icon_thumright:
Ash is an industry standard wood for high end guitars, used for decades to make some of the best axes ever made.

If your current strat is too bright, that's probably because it has bright, vintage output pickups in it. You could try turning down the treble on your amp or the guitar, if that doesn't work we'd be happy to suggest further mods.

Depends on the ash.

Swamp Ash ('50s Fenders were made with this): Balanced with slightly scooped mids

Northern Hard Ash (very dense & heavy): bright

The maple neck will add to the brightness, but the rosewood fingerboard will help tame the brightness.

I'd do Swamp Ash body + Maple neck + Rosewood fingerboard (with said vintage output pickups per your question) if I was picking.

May I suggest Swamp Ash with a Wenge/Ebony neck??? :) :icon_biggrin:

You know, I bookmarked that thread a while ago because IMHO that's about as good as it gets. An absolutely killer combination when it comes to looks. But I bet it sounds great too. :)

Rosewood fingerboard can help:

That ain't no Ash body though.  For the most part and for whatever reason, Fender doesn't do Sunburst finishes on Ash bodies.  There are exceptions, but they are just that.

Well, I was trying to show the difference in tone on Maple Vs Rosewood...

And from the Fender catalogues I have (but are a long time without been looked), the solid finished tend to be on Alde (ugly) and the trans/burst/dye in Ash or Maple top

that's why amps have a "treble" and a "presence" knob.

really that can be a bright combo, but is one of the most common combos among fender guitars and many others. i don't know what sizzle is, i've never seen a guitar sizzle. but if you are worried about ice pick in the ear brightness consider humbuckers and remember guitars have tone controls for a reason. i don't think you can go wrong really, you can get the strat "quack" that only comes from a strat and if you desire highs can be dialed out.

Ash is usually done in their Natural or Butterscotch finish whereas the Solid and Bursts are on Alder.  Again, there are exceptions.

I've got a Fender ash Strat from late 78 or maybe early 79.

It is the 2nd brightest guitar I've ever played, with the 72 ash Tele being more bright.

These are heavy, dense, hard ash guitars with maple necks.  Very bright.

Ash in the "swamp" variant is a lot more mellow when compared to the ubber dense hard type.

Tone wise, how would you compare similar strats, with one being alder & the other swamp ash?

I'm not fond of overly bright guitars & am torn between ash & alder for my next warmoth build.
