Anybody try this move?

I wish I could find a video or something but it doesn't seem to be much of a deal to most people.
The most crazy person I've ever seen on stage is Rick Jackett from Finger eleven.  I've seen him swing is guitar around his neck like a hoolahoop. What gets me most is all the things he does and he is still able to play while he does it.  He'd do things like hold the guitar at the nut and fling it into the air while he was letting a chord ring out. and then let it fall back down on to him hoping that the strap would land on his shoulders.  most of hte time It didn't and he'd catch it on his elbow or something. or it would fall back down on him backwards. and he'd always just go with it and find a way to keep playing.  The guy rarely misses a note, it's unreal.  I've also never seen him drop a guitar.  and i've seen them live about 8 times.

I wouldn't try it with my LP, that's for sure.  Maybe my hollow strat.  The LP is heavy, it would crack my skull if I screwed up.  Which reminds me, I heard Krist Novaselic once gave himself a concussion trying to toss his bass up and catch it on stage.

HAH!  Great clip, gnome.  I love how he gets up and falls on his face.  Poor Krist Novaselic, he was not a particularly good rockstar, and he had to hang around with Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl.  Made him look like a big dweeb.

Side note, Kurt is really strung out in that clip.  He should cut back, it's bad for his health

I had the honor of teching for Warner for close to 10 years on and off. He swears by Dunlop Straploks and has never had a failure. I've watched him check new ones in his driveway. I had to beg him to do it on the lawn...

The big trick is to use nylon straps; cotton or leather are too sticky.

The secret is to make sure your string ends are turned down at the pegs so you don't stick your fingers when you grab the headstock for the 'counterclockwise' throw. The other is to be sure if you throw it the other way (clockwise), watch out for your mic stand or anything else in the way, since the guitar makes a much wider arc. Warner told me a story about making a clockwise toss one night just as a girl came over the barrier to climb on stage. She took the headstock right in the nose. Much blood ensued, but luckily that was the only suing.

Eric Ambel said he once tried a 'Warner spin' in his kitchen and it resulted in some re-decoration. But he said it didn't bother him because it was one of Warner's guitars!

Warner's been touring a lot with Dan Baird, using Warmoth Teles. Between him and Dan, you will never see a better display of telecaster mastery (pardon the pun), nor will you ever meet two nicer, more self-effacing people. I feel lucky to call Warner my best friend.

Yep, I think that's part of my problem right there - I gave it another whirl (haha - joke - I slay me :icon_jokercolor:) last night and the (cotton) strap kept getting hung up on my clothes.

Thanks WhiteBison66 for this great information!

Don't worry Tonar - I'll be careful.  Besides, I'm only doing this with fairly tough guitars.  My rickenbackers will stay in the cases for this one.

Alfgang is right thatmove was used a lot in the 80's, mostly by hair metal bands. Steve Vai as Doc mentioned and Yngwie as kbob said, Warren DiMartini, Rudy Sarzo. The list goes on and on...You could probably throw a dart at a pile of bands names from that era and chances are the guitar playes used that move... :party07:

I used to do it with my ESP all the time at the final song of our set.  I won't even think of it with my TFS6, but I've done it with my Ibanez's before also, both directions.

All my stuff is on VHS, I don't have a way of converting it over to the computer.

Who here would pay to see a young Tony FlyingSquirrel toss an ESP over his shoulder?  :toothy10:

So we need to pool and buy him a VHS-to-USB cable video import device? I think they make such things.

Nah, just run RCA's from the VCR to a video capture card.  Its the new version of LP to cassette, press play on one and record on the other.  :icon_thumright:

So I was learning a Jason and the Scorchers song for next rehersal and using utube to get an idea of neck position etc for the various licks.

Then I saw this!  Anybody try that throw-the-guitar-over-the-shoulder move?  I want to try it... but I don't want to try it at the same time!
I almost tried it last night in the kitchen, but was just too damn scared  :o

anybody give this a whirl?  I guess I'll need a wireless unit to pull this one off on stage.

This vid reminds me of a high school or cable access talent show, only for old people.... from the '80s.... but I can't stop watching it.... help me.....  :headbang1:

My first adult-size electric (a Strat knock-off) met its end doing one of these moves one too many times.

Wana-- I was really, really hoping that video was gonna go wrong, and then it didn't, and i was a little disappointed.
