The reverse V was created when the splibs on the routing line snafu'd the V body neck route - as none of them had ever SEEN a V before, having worked for the company only about 2 days.  When Henry got over being mad, he said... ok, we'll make LEMONAID from the lemons... and they actually sold pretty well.

Actually, I think the body looks more natural that way.  too bad the pick guard looks silly and the head stock looks f*cking retarded.

I beleive that is modeled after the Gibson Moderne's headstock.  I am with you though, I can't stand it!
