Another auto-tuning guitar.

The virtual guitar stuff (Variax, Roland VG) can pitch shift indiviual strings for alternate tunings.

What's wrong with just having a second instrument for alternate tunings?

Nothing at all.  This is just an "ease of use" thing.  I could have multiple tunings without having to swap guitars mid-set.  As I get older, I prefer to do less tap-dancing and appreciate an elegant solution.

I've seen many bands that stopped in between songs for a minute to re-tune to a different tuning.  As an audience member, I really didn't mind waiting a minute for the next song.

The auto-tuners take maybe half the time (at least, that's about how long the Robot took when I tried it at GC).  So, taking a minute to tune vs. taking 30 seconds to tune... it doesn't seem like a function I would pay hundreds of dollars extra for.
+1 I agree.

I think guitar modelling is the way forward, its just a damn shame they all sound like a cheap casio keyboard.  :toothy10:

I like the concept and convenience, but it just seems like something that will break down at some point. If they started equipping guitars with these in the 70s, how many would still function do you think?

I still prefer the idea of just swapping out guitars

I think this is a perfect thing for beginner guitar players, as well as for all the other reasons mentioned, Keeping a guitar tuned right and sounding good is a huge deal for new players.

And yes I know they can use a guitar tuner, but anything that makes it easy to get started the better

I think it was a Fender thing actually.  Does Variax do that as well?  I'm not really familiar with them.

Actually, IIRC, the Fender VG Strat only had a handful of preset tunings, while the Variax allowed you to tune each string up to an octave sharp or flat, and save as many weird tunings as you wanted.

True, but I don't think that many beginning guitarists would go out and get a $1600 guitar for their first axe.

Definitely not, alot of my local shops business is from parents buying their children their first guitar around the £150 mark,  people looking for a bit more of a serious guitar around the £500-1200 mark and for serious amateurs/pros going well above that.

Plenty of my students cant tune a guitar even with a guitar tuner, the truth of the matter is they tune until the green light flashes and most of the time it sounds like shit because its a cheap peice of junk, i remember when i started out it just never seemed right until i learnt that you need to make it slightly out of tune to get the strings sounding nice together. After ahwile you get used to how the strings harmonise together and you see the difference between highend guitars and low end guitars in that they TUNE! and you dont have to make one or 2 of the strings slightly out of tune.

If my guitar tuned itself, I would be in a worse position. You learn through necessity, The reason why millions of guitar players can't read music and have under developed ears is because of tab, Sure tab has its benefits but it has its drawbacks, and its drawbacks are far worse then its benefits. Not having the internet and forcing myself to learn by ear has helped me a great deal in my development.
