Aluminum strat project

That's a substantial plate. How are you going to bend that thing? You got a press brake laying around someplace?

Also, what are you going to do about hardening? My understanding is that that's difficult to do with stainless.

How badly does it need to be hardened for this application?  Or are you talking specifically about the pivot points, Cagey?

Thats the mob I was talking about  :evil4:  having trouble with ....  and very slack correspondence from them too.
The worst I have ever had ....... and that includes dealing with Gibson .... HJ is pathetic. Thats why Gibson is crap these days.

So anyone here actually have one of those Moses necks ?
Like to hear your story.

I have a few. It kind of depends. If you want something standard, you can usually get it quite quickly. They'll be quite prompt, build it to spec and deliver it. I usually got my standard orders (two Strat necks, one of them headless) within six weeks.

If you want something a little more custom, you may wait quite a long time with little in the way of communication, and there are always excuses. It feels like they get the interesting and fun bit done very quickly, and then get bored and move on to other stuff. I've waited eight months for a new type of neck before. Granted, it was the first one of that style they'd ever done, and it was only theoretical when I ordered it, but still, eight months is quite a while.

The work is generally very good, but the fretwork can be kind of spotty. They offer some nice options; the finishes are very cool, and you can get them in multi-scale (they call them "slanted frets").

At the end of the day, you get a basically indestructible neck that doesn't warp, flex or crack under any temperature or humidity conditions and which is perfectly uniform and incredibly playable, for a price that is moderately high compared to other guitar neck manufacturers, but VERY low compared to most carbon fibre fabrication companies. If it's a custom job, you just might get the urge to harm yourself and others from frustration several times between the ordering and the reception.

The product is, in my opinion, great. Customer service could be better.

Only the pivots need to be hardened, but it's a serious need. The metal will blunt and gall quickly otherwise, and the bridge won't pivot back to neutral reliably. Some bridges - I think some versions of the Floyd - actually have separate pivot inserts to deal with that issue.

T-304 is already substantially hard, at least the piece i got is. Hard as hell to cut. My little 'ol bandsaw wouldn't even hardly scratch it. Had to score it with a cut off wheel, and work some majic with a hacksaw rest of the way..

Don't think I'll have to worry about the pivot points, this steel is tough, I guarantee the pivot bolts will wear out before this plate... :icon_biggrin:

I forgot about the smoke wrench w/ hammer and tongs. That could be made to work.

Well, on the plus side, you have the wherewithal to make another one if this one gets hinky on you.

as much as I love that guitar my OCD would be in overdrive.....I'd just have to drink heavily, play it and deal with the fingerprints the next day :laughing3:

That's quite a showpiece, isn't it? Hard to believe they never got any more popular than they did. I would think everybody and their brother would want one.

+1...... :headbang:

I always enjoy Doug's builds and this one is no exception. I also like unconventional stuff and DIY, so I'm having a blast watching this one!

You should start making aluminum bodies Doug, you'll quit your day job... :headbang:
The same pickguard also, this combo looks amazing  :icon_thumright:

No gold hardware on this one. I found the photobucket page where he has his secret plans for this guitar.

Got my custom made pups in today from Ken at Roadhouse.  The button head cap screws were my idea, coming from the invader style hum. I wanted that look in a single coil. Not sure how they are going to sound, but with Ken at the helm, I'm sure they will be off the charts... :headbang1:

Oh ya, and he named them after me...D6's.. :headbang1: :headbang1:
