7/8th Esquire

Well, "Screamin' Deals" has been calling my name the last couple of months, so I have answered the siren song...

I should have saved the big pictures before I purchased - Warmoth pulls the threads the second you buy something from the showcase.
So now there's nothing to gaze at whilst awaiting delivery. Here's what i have on the way...




Rounding this out will be a Babicz original (aluminum plate) tele bridge, a set of Hipshot locking tuners, and most probably a Kinman pickup (still debating which model...)

This is an unfinished body with no contours, so I will be rasping and sanding it to add the forearm contour, tummy cut, and contoured heel options. Then a Tru-oil finish, or maybe Osmo Top-Oil (Anyone here ever tried it???)

And the 'No inlays' seemed to be a "BUY ME NOW sign" ...
(I don't need fretboard markers as my fingers always know where they are going. Playing 50 years will do that for you...)

Update: decided on the Kinman AVn-60b. Chris says that's the most dynamic of all of his tele bridge pups...

That neck

12-16” is interesting. Should result in a milder saddle radius than the 10-16”.

Traditional Tele hardware here (chrome) or are you going to match the nut with some black hardware? What kind of pickguard?

Yep, going with traditional Chrome finish for the hardware.
The pickguard is Warmoth's black/red/black three layer (fancy red pinstripe on the edge!). It's the custom size one that fits their 7/8th tele. Will cover up the existing tele neck pup rout- and give this thing a sort of traditional-vintage-tele-Esquire-esque flavor! (plus I'm pondering routing out more under the pickguard for weight reduction...)

Two delivery notices yesterday (duty/taxes payable). Paid em both, and one parcel is coming in tomorrow... And one came in TODAY!

Picked up at post office, had a peek in the car




Looking forward to the body and pickguard tomorrow. 'Duty' was just the regular 13% taxes, no extra tariffs applied...

splendid! Apart from knobs and string ferrules, all of the Esquire parts are in the building


This is one really hard chunk of Alder! Supremely solid with a nice bright tap tone. I need to rummage through some boxes and find my japanese wood rasps...

I've been eyeing the available flamed roasted maple necks for months, seen a lot of very nice ones. This neck has 'very high grade' flame figure, one step below their 'super high grade' option. Is there an 'ultra high grade'? I dunno if those are off-menu special order things... The builder only specs for flame maple, AAA flame maple, or roasted flame maple. My last two custom necks were both 'plain roasted maple' so I don't have any personal experience with the flame order choices...

Knobs arrived today! Pic doesn't do them justice, they're friggin nice. That's a Schaller Super switch 'S' (5-position) and I'm not sure yet what to wire it as...

Btw, before I get too carried away, checked to see how much room is in the cavity for that switch (I've never tried the angled switchplate before!)
Looks like a millimeter or two of wiggle room, so this should be interesting...

I like that angled tog switch and the neck is incredible! Very cool. Look forward to seeing it assembled.

Well, that's gonna be quite a while, first I should really put together that short-scale Z bass that's been sitting in the boxes for the last three years (!)... I don't have an actual workbench here yet so I'm not really set up for carving, routing, and sanding until the snow melts and I can clean out the garage. Here's the last look at it for now ...

PS: what I found really striking was how Light Weight that bridge is... It's featherweight! The control plate with just two pots on it felt twice as heavy
