All maple neck with nut, should I spray over the nut or remove it?

I just received my new maple neck with an installed nut, Not sure if I should remove the nut and try to mask the nut slot or just spray over it.

Thoughts?

It might be an easier strategy to mask off the parts of the nut that are proud from the rest of the neck and spray over the masking tape and the neck. When dry you then remove the masking tape.
