Aerosol gloss... how many cans to get?

I'm in the middle of refinishing a fender J-bass body in ReRanch sonic blue, and so far, it's been about 2 cans per stage (primer, color coat), and looking at my trusty stew-mac catalog, they suggest 4 cans of clear lacquer per guitar. I'm somewhat assuming that they're talking about an acoustic or solid body/neck refinish.

Just wondering if anybody here has done an aerosol refinish, and how much clear lacquer cans you needed.

Thanks!

It usually takes me about 3 for guitar bodies. Get 4 to be sure.

I recently finished a P-bass in Sonic Blue from RR.  I used about 2 cans of S&S, 1 can of primer, 2 cans of color, and almost 3 cans of clear.  I usually hold back a little of the color in case I get a sand thru after the clear coats are on and I start sanding.  I definately recommend a light touch while sanding and always use a small sanding block.  Careful on the edges, too.  If you follow RR 101 lesson on refinishing, you are almost home!    :icon_biggrin:
