which extra hole do you mean? there's only one "extra" hole - originally for the retainer:

I object to string retainers. They only exist to cover up a sloppy/amateur nut fabrication, which is why Leo came up with them in the first place. High production requirements and unskilled labor drove their necessity, and now everybody uses them because a bajillion '60s heroin addicts can't be wrong.

perhaps this was a reason - i'm trying to make my strat close as much as possible to its origin - '57 RI. the original AVRI (;)) has a retainer - so it's gonna be on my strat.

i faced to a silly problem - what do the forum's people use to tune their axes? i mean, is there any good place, where all parameters would be described: string heights, pickup positions, etc., etc.? first, i need to correct the nut - the gap between the strings and the 1st fret is too big.
