I object to string retainers. They only exist to cover up a sloppy/amateur nut fabrication, which is why Leo came up with them in the first place. High production requirements and unskilled labor drove their necessity, and now everybody uses them because a bajillion '60s heroin addicts can't be wrong.

perhaps this was a reason - i'm trying to make my strat close as much as possible to its origin - '57 RI. the original AVRI () has a retainer - so it's gonna be on my strat.
i faced to a silly problem - what do the forum's people use to tune their axes? i mean, is there any good place, where all parameters would be described: string heights, pickup positions, etc., etc.? first, i need to correct the nut - the gap between the strings and the 1st fret is too big.
Anyway, regarding setup, if you ask specific questions here, you'll get good answers. Lotta talent floating around. Or, you could buy one of Dan Earlwine's books such as How to Make Your Electric Guitar Play Great or The Guitar Player Repair Guide. My understanding is that they're both good books.
