What's the difference between a punch and an awl?

People suggest using an awl to mark the hole you are drilling to stop the bit from slipping.
But I cant seem to find an awl so I was wondering if a punch (without hammering) could manually do the same thing. Does anyone know the difference and whether an awl or punch is better?

Thank You.

An awl is pointed; a punch may or may not be. But, if you have a small, pointed punch, then that'll work fine. In fact, anything hard with a point on it will work fine. You may be able to use a neck attachment screw. You're just trying to make a small dent in the wood.
