Is it just so that there isn't a gap under the fretboard overhang if you have a 22 fret board and no scratchplate?

I saw that, that's why I asked.  I can only see that it will drop the bottom of the fingerboard flush with the body

It decreases the gap between the body and the fretboard overhang. There is nothing more to it.

I for one beg to differ...
That's an overall difference of .08 (in the world of CNC / machining, that's A LOT) over the stock depth of .640, and it allows one to get the string action closer to the body for those of us that prefer a fast more "shreddy" feel.

It's obvious that the action will lower if you seat the neck deeper in the pocket.

For you, and me perhaps.
But what about Joe Blow with no real background in Applied sciences ?
I know guys that are phenomenal players, but that are SO mechanically Dis-inclined the pay people to change their strings....

I ordered the .720 mod on my Soloist back in 2009, but I don't think they did it, because there is still quite a gap between the fretboard and the body.

two questions,
Was it a Lam top?
Was it W finished, or did you do it?

My first soloist was W poly finished, and Maple Lam top.
The finger board has almost ZERO gap to the body.

My second Soloist is Swamp ash, no Lam top, DIY finished.
That has a gap of approx 2mm between the board and body.
