FWIW, Chris Squire (bassist for Yes) used a pick, and it seemed to do him pretty well  :dontknow:

Fingers and pick, I can do both, with equal results. for me, though, a pick gives me a bit more edge, and easier to pinch with a pick than with fingers.

Pikk (pick) means d*ck in Norwegian  :hello2:

Norwegian people, stop playing with your pikk!! and Orf, stop pinching your pik!

* edit - I have the same problem with the word "kut".. really bad word in Dutch!  I still have to giggle about a bunch of hair salons in my direct neighbourhood that tried to think up funky names for their business.. .. we have Klassic Kuts, a Kut above, Elite Kuts, Linda's Kut and Kurl, and Kiddie Kuts!!  :tard: :sad1: :-\ :tard: :tard:

Klassy Kuts hair removal service? :tard:

I don't really focus on bass, but I have one and when I play it I use a pick. It sounds good to me and I can do it. I don't understand how playing with my fingers works. I admire guys that can do it, but I'm clueless at it.

That sounded a bit... :laughing7:

jay4321, haha yeah i know all of that is true, i dunno tbh, there is just some deep loathing of jason inside me, sure yeah he is good, but theres just something there that gets me.
and yeah i get what you mean about metallica starting to really suck now, and trujillo is a good bass player himself, on par with cliff speed wise with fingers, but yeah the song writing has lapsed, im guessing it wouldve gone on strong for a couple more years if cliff was still alive i guess, but who knows no one will.
Sorry for the majorly offtopic, that just is a serious question to me, and it comes out sometimes haha
as far as playing is concerned i bless whoever made plectrums as i can just about manage fast picking songs like megadeth, tbh they wouldnt sound right with fingers after ive tried numerous times with fingers,
Life blows at times dont it?  :help:

I don't like playing with a pick...it feels too detached to me.  I alternate between fingers and slapping a lot when I can.  But yeah, mostly fingers.  I will play with a pick at times when I want that tight attack, but usually it's not what I'm shooting for.

Where's the "All of the above" option?  Anyone who doesn't use all the tools available to them is a fool.

There is no way in hell you are going to get me to slap, so go ahead and call me a fool.
Fool is much more respectful than "slap bass player." :tard: :tard:

I do not know what is up with people. Times change, people change, music changes. Why do people always compare the band's new sound with the old one? The vocals sound different (ie. Metallica, James got older = James got a deeper voice), so the sound of the songs differs. Ain't that what we want? Do we want every song from, let's say Metallica or Sepultura (Got a new vocalist, many disliked the fact that Sepultura moved on) to sound the same? Would it look something like this?:
Album: Master of Puppets
Song 1:Master of Puppets
Song 2:Master of Puppets
Song 3:Master of Puppets
Song 4:Master of Puppets
Song 5:Master of Puppets
Song 6:Master of Puppets
Song 7:Master of Puppets
Song 8:Master of Puppets
:dontknow:
I, for one, actually prefer Death Magnetic over all the other albums. The sound is more progressive, and it shows that Metallica isn't stuck back in the 80's, like Megadeth :laughing7:

Seriously? I want to slap :laughing7:, but I can't :sad1:

Haha yeah i know times change people change music change, and isnt so much the old sound to the new sound, its just, well i guess cliff is one of a number of bassists that brough equal share of the music to the hefty four string, and he was robbed of many years, not a peeve with the sounds, just this life sucks tbh, given the chance i wouldve been born ten or twenty years ago and enjoyed all the shizz i have missed being born in 1991  :-\
and i havent listened to new megadeth stuff.
But least the 80's you could hear the lyrics, half of the stuff now is deep blahhhhs and all that, sure it saves getting a person than can sing but apart from getting your arm ripped off in moshpits whats it good for?
anyways im not dissing music as a whole, just the band hierachy and how one of the few that changed it for the band they were in were robbed, anyways im butting out of this now, too offtopic!

And this is why these discussion turn pointless.  When musical expression is reduced to what's "respectable" and what isn't, it's time to walk away.

edit: for poor typing

I meant for me, not was right and wrong for everyone else.

You all can do whatever you want with your musical expressions, but I'm not, and shouldn't be seen as any less of a player if I don't use every technique on the list.

I play with my fingers. No picks, and no slapping. Call me a fool then. :tard:

Why shouldn't you be seen as less of a player for deciding what techniques you use to make music based on what's "respectable" rather than understanding a wider musical vocabulary?

I'm talking about what's respectable to my taste, not what's generally accepted or frowned upon.
There are a lot of bass tones out there that I absolutely despise, and I think it's more respectable to be called a fool than to have people think that I associate with them.

Because image is what matters, and not music, right?

-Mark

You know damn well I don't give a shit about image. I absolutely despise it!
You also know damn well that my taste in tone and guitars is not what anyone else cares for. It's very unpopular.

The super awesome part of this is that I wasn't referring to homosexuality at all, but I see how this comes off like that.  You're just mad because Marcus Miller made Weather Report better.
