I'm finally building a 2x12 cab for my 1973 sound city 120 head. I was thinking two 100 watt ceramic Weber Axis (fane copys) might just do the trick. Any body played/heard them..

opinions..

Thanks

I have a Weber in my Deluxe Reverb, and it sounds great.  There are a couple of knocks on Webers, that aren't really, but they always come up.

They take quite a while to break in, and have an odd brittle sound until they do.  There are lots of ways to get them broken in, but the easiest is to play a lot.  It will sound better with time.

There are a lot of options, enough to be really confusing.  Take what ever speaker you want, get the specs and match them as closely as you can with the Weber ones.  They allow you to specify just about everyting.

Doping is a treatment that can make or break a speakers sound.  Read up on it at the site.  I had a speaker without it, different brand, and it would ring like crazy.  I put the current speaker I have in, and it was worlds apart for the better.  They are other reasons I like the current speaker I have in there, but the doping is responsible for removing that problem.

On the whole, I really like their speakers.  But you do have to put in a little effort to get the most out of them.

I'm curious about these Weber Fane copies as well, so I'd be grateful if you post a review if you decide go in that direction.

I know that the Weber "Legacy" line of speakers it the same as the brand Scumback speakers.  Ted did the work to replicate the Pre Rola celestions that they had, and they came up with a whole slew of options for Scumback.  But they are identical, except that they are about $60 cheaper, and don't have the pre broken in option.

However, I don't know about the Fane repro's, so that will be fun to hear about.

Sad to say I never liked weber speakers. I offered them as an option with my amps. Was never impressed with the ones that I installed. Eminence always sounded much better and are still my favourite.

Oddly enough, I had an Eminence in my Deluxe that was the problem.  I have often found that the speaker to amp match is a difficult process.  That being said, the Weber worked well for me.

Well, the Weber worked a lot better for me after it was broken in, the original sound was a bit tough to get used to.  It did handle the highs and lows better, at any point, than the eminence.  And that was a lot of what I was after.

Interestingly, Mike Soldano has made the same observation, but with Celestion vs. Eminence.  When he designed the T50/100 line for Yamaha, he was annoyed (but totally understood the economics of it) when they took his design end subbed in the Celestion speaker for the Eminence he specified.

It wasn't the Axis, but the FC12 that is the copy of the Fane Cresendo.

To clarify, the FC12 is indeed supposed to copy the Fane Crescendo speakers, which I believe were used by David Gilmour in his WEM cabs.

The Axis copies the Fane AX12 speaker, which I believe was the HiWatt speaker.

Yes..

Ok, I ended up ordering a weber 2 x 12 cab loaded with two 100 watt ceramic axis 12's. One with a paper cone, one with a hemp cone. I had weber break them in for 60 hrs on their machine. I am pushing them with a 1973 sound city 120 mark 4 (six el 34). I really like the sound, nice crisp attack that mellos out great. They can really chime. I'm sure liking the combo. The only problem (not for me now) is the volume level. this is the loudest set up I have ever played. when you open it up it really screams.. I run it about 35% at practice and it sure sounds nice on small venue volume as well.
More reviews to come as I acclimate.
