To me,nut width has a biggger impact on feel than neck thickness.
It would be nice if they included the nut width in the info bar of each neck.
They already have it measured and written in the heel.

Not sure what you mean by the "info bar". The nut width is already included in the showcase description of every in-stock neck. Is there someplace else?

I think he means written on the actual neck heel itself.

This is one problem that I think could be solved by a ruler.

No, I don't think so. It's already written on the heel, and he says he knows that in the OP, so he must mean something else.

It's written on the heel out to 3 decimal places, so it appears somebody is putting a caliper on it after the neck has been sanded. I doubt it needs to be recorded to that accuracy, but why argue with your instrumentation? On the downside, it's a confusing number. Is it 1 11/16" or 1.687"? I have a Pau Ferro neck here that's marked as having a 1.690" nut width. Should I be worried?  :laughing7:

I assume the OP means that he'd like to see the actual measured width (as written on the heel) stated in the pop-up and/or full description, rather than just the nominal specced width. The heel markings are not always legible in the photos.

Ah...that interpretation makes sense.

I guess my response would be that the dimension written on the heel is not there for customer use. It's there for internal use. It's a workman's mark, essentially. The only reason you guys know what it refers to is because you're a bunch of guitar nerds who frequent this forum. And bless you for it.

However, that number is probably never going to become an "official spec" for a several reasons:

1. It's too precise. Is it 1.687" before the finish? Before it was shipped to some other climate, and became 1.685" or 1.689"? Before Jim the sander took one extra swipe with the sandpaper, and made it 1.686"?
2. Our product is complicated enough for customers as it is. It's easier for customers to understand/make a choice if we use just five main nut width "buckets".
3. It's a crazy standard to hold a manufacturer to, when they are working with an organic material. E.g. CUSTOMER: "Your description said 1.680", but my calipers say it is 1.685". I don't care that I live in New Orleans. I would like to return it."

Actually, we had to let Jim go. Every single neck we let him work on came out a thousandth of an inch too small. Multiple performance evaluations and he still couldn't get it right.


Dude now works at a Cinnabon, last I heard.
