Warmoth 5 string neck pocket

I am currently making a bass for my son from a killer piece of 100 year old wood.  I think it is sycamore.  He is looking for a 5 string which presents my problem.  I only have routing jigs for fender 4 string pockets.  I know the Warmoth 5 string heel it a bit larger.  I suppose I could make one once I have the neck.

Anyone have a template that could be used or offer any suggestions?

These guys will make custom remplates. I've not used them, but they look like a good resource.

I have looked in them.  Not sure what we are going to do.  He wants to order a 4 string neck with 1 3/4 nut and put on a 5 string nut.  I worry about the spacing.  The neck heel is 64mm at the bottom.  The Schaller bridge he wants can go to 64mm.  That does not leave a lot of room for the strings.  Can’t he be happy with just 4 strings?!?!?!?

Tough to say. The last bass I owned was a 5 string Jazz bass wannabe, so the neck was somewhat narrow and thin with closely-spaced strings, relatively speaking. But, I have a guitar background, so I wanted something I could handle easily and many basses are somewhat chunky in the neck. I don't know what your son's considerations are, but a view to what's practical rather than convenient may be more in order.

It's funny - I didn't really want to play bass, but a musician friend of mine with a medical background suggested it as a "therapy" device so I could build hand strength and coordination. I had no idea at the time how much work those things can be.

Do a 4 string and put a D-tuner on it or find a template. Tell him there might be a reason why nobody seems to do what's being contemplated.

I have a Warmoth Standard 5 Jazz body that's made out of poplar I would be willing to sell for the price of shipping it to you. You could get measurements off it and use it for a template. I'm not doing anything with it and I was thinking of throwing it away.

That may work.  Shipping to 15228.  I could use it to make a template....and a new bass too :occasion14:

I have a Hipshot kicka$$ bridge, a Nordstrandt Precision pickup and a Richter passive Jazz control plate as well, if you're interested.
