1 5/8 Nut and Floyd Rose String slipping

Hi there! I'll be ordering a Warmoth neck soon but I have a couple of questions/concerns.

My favorite Stratocaster has a 1 5/8 nut width and I much prefer that over 1 11/16. (I have small hands). Looking into ordering a 1 5/8 neck with R2 Floyd rose nut and medium frets. Because of the string spacing of the Floyd Rose bridge, I'm concerned that if I choose a 1 5/8 nut width, the high E string will be slipping off of the fretboard specifically up in the higher frets closer to the bridge. Some people have suggested going with a 1.65 nut width with R2 Floyd nut. I've tried that before but it felt like there was a little too much room on the Low E string.

Can anyone share some advice? Is it something I shouldn't be worried about?

Also, does anyone know if the satin nitro tends to go glossy after playing it for a while?

Thanks in advance!

Satin anything gets glossy after a while of playing.

The R2 nut should be fine for what you are asking about. I have plenty of charvels and fenders and have done several iterations of what you are looking to do and the string slipping wont be an issue.

Thanks so much! Giving me the confidence to go ahead and order the neck.
Satin turning glossy is fine. I guess im just worried that it might get sticky?

No problem wuth the R2...I also have a Kramer Pro-axe with a R1 nut. It takes time to get used but it's well playable.

I have the same issue with a 1.65 nut on a jazzmaster using a warmoth jaguar bridge... wish I knew how to fix it

The width of the heel of the neck is the same on a 1 5/8", 1.65 or 1 11/16" neck. The nut width has no influence on the higher frets to be concerned about.

Ancient Fender secret… you can loosen the neck screws, push the neck left/right, then retighten to adjust the string alignment. Better to nail it down when you first install the neck so the threading is nice and tight. Install both E strings, wiggle the neck in the pocket with the screws partially inserted until neither is hanging off the fretboard, and tighten down.

Most folks cheat the high E a little inward because they don’t play/bend the low E up in the higher frets near as much.

Keep in mind, that lack of real estate is due to saddle spacing 99% of the time, not nut spacing.
Yea, I was worried that the Floyd Rose bridge spacing would be too wide for my 1 5/8 neck. Was mostly worried about string slipping in the higher register and not so much closer to the nut.

Been playing on 1 5/8" wide necks with jumbos for close to 40 years, never been a problem.
WIth a floyd rose bridge? or similar string spacing to the floyd? Im glad to hear it works out for people. Just a little apprehensive but also excited to order a new neck! Also, Should i avoid heavy roll on the fretboard edges or is that also no issue?

I have done this comparison a few times and I was able to find a drawing. The nut widths are listed and the strings shown are 0.046" low E and 0.010" high E. The measurements are to the center of the string.

The bottom one is a Charvel neck which has a wider 2-1/4" heel vs the 2-3/16" heel that Warmoth and Fender use.

Hope this is helpful!

The guy in your avatar uses and R2 nut with a 1 and 5/8" width neck. Also Adrian plays the same configuration...and Van Halen used it too.

Dave Murray and Adrian Smith are using 1 5/8" necks? Their signature guitars from Fender and Jackson show R3 Nut. I know their actual guitars might not match exactly to signature guitars available for us to buy.

Dave Murray´s number 1 is the black Strat, 1957 neck , 1963 body, that is 1 5/8". That guitar does not have a FR but in the 80s he used several vintage Strats that were retrofitted with FR, therefore they had R2s.

Adrian´s smith original Jacksons from Somewhere in Time were patterned after a 1955 Strat that he keeps in his house, supposedly for collection only, therefore they should be R2s.

Before being endorsed by Jackson again one of his favourite guitars in the early 2000s was a Fender Strat Classic USA Floyd Rose with R2.

P.S. I have a Kramer Pro-axe with a 40mm neck and a rare R1 nut...no issue whatsoever to play even with that narrow neck.
