Pine is pretty soft - I'd use birdshot if it were me.  From a distance.  No choke.

Wow.  I'm in the middle of a W bass build with very similar goals.  My inspiration is barnyard or barns in general.  I too emphasizing the red and dried-out wood look, see pic.  That tele in the previous post is really cool.  This is my first W project and it will be hard to screw up.  Anyway, I'll post pics tonight in in-progress.  Back to your project, good luck.  I voted barn-door of course.

Having built up my fair share of Ikea furniture in my time, everytime there's a mention of 'pine' I'm thinking Ikea-caster!

Clear gloss in retail can finish (Estapol in Australia) & applied thick and fast with a little sanding back here and there between coats. Oh, and lots of allen screws.  :icon_biggrin:
