If you mean Metallica's Black Album, I'm right there with you.

Metallica does not exist for me after this album. All the other albums they have released since Black they suck too! They are by far the biggest sellout in R'N'R considering how exciting & original they were when they recorded their first demo. By the way... Napster (and every Napster) rules :icon_thumright:

If anyone remembers the Eddie Murphy SNL skit where he claims to be the 5th Beatle, he was Clarence and he played the Sax.  "Help" was originally "Help Me Man."  "She Loves You" was originally "She Loves you Man."  He claimed if you played "Let It Be" backwards, you could here John and Paul conspiring against him.  "Hey Paul, let's get rid of Clarence and steal all of his good ideas."

Well, along those lines, a HS friend of mine swore if you played Master of Puppets backwards, you'd hear James saying to Kirk and Lars, "Let's kill Cliff, get wah pedals and sell out big."

All members are guilty but I think the sellout it was Lars idea. Nothing wrong with wahs, Cliff had one and Kirk had from the first LP. Not many like Kirk but I like every solo he played on the first four LP's. His solos fit the songs and that's what a solo is all about.

i really liked Some Kind of Monster. like i said to somebody else, if another band had released that album people would have loved it. but they just expected too much from the great Metallica. if they made another Ride The Lightening (my favorite album of their's) people would accuse them of not trying anything new and playing it safe. so they did and EVERYBODY and their mom complained. there's no winning  :-\

and about napster, if Metallica didn't put an end to that, somebody else would have. at least Metallica was a big enough band to put a decisive end to it, instead of small struggling bands who really DID need their music to be purchased and have their case ignored just because nobody had heard of them.

Metallica was the band (like the Grateful Dead) who was inviting the fans with their tape recorders to record their live prformances. This was happening when they were a band.
When the band changed to greedy rock stars they had to make money and stop free distribution of art (music).
Obviously we have different opinion on this. I believe in D.I.Y. and no rights at all when it comes to art. Words and sounds do not have owners. Music is not a job to make money although many people make profit from it. I can't stand by Metallica when other bands have released free songs or albums on the net. Do they loose money? I think not but even if they do I really don't care, they have lots of money.

The small struggling bands should know that live performances will help their music to be heard. Same will do the free distribution. If a band starts to play music and they are not doing it for fun but for money then there's something wrong with this band. The world is full of rock stars, don't need more.

I've got some opinions on this, but this is the internet so I'll adopt the "pick your battles" attitude.  Both sides have good points and think they're right, but like politics or religion, it's never over, nothing is solved so it's best to move on.

I love all these artists, dearly.

Pink Floyd were on the way down.  They redeemed themselves with Division Bell, the Division Bell tour, and then Live Aid with Roger before calling it a day.  RIP Rick.

GODFLESH were never on their way down.  They kicked so much ass that Justin did every other band on the planet a favor by ending it.

Ozric Tentacles continue to rise and fly under the radar.  So does Little Axe.

Phish began to fall in the late '90s.  Don't care that they've reformed.

The Grateful Dead went all "easy listening" in the '80s.

Motorhead still kick ass, though I still favor their material from the early days with Fast Eddie and Philthy Animal.

Marillion took a giant swan dive after Fish was given the boot.

Django Reinhardt totally sucked after he died.  Same with Emily Remler, Charlie Christian and Joe Pass.

It took Rick Rubin to corner Metallica in a room and slap them in the face to remind them that they were Metallica.  And we finally get a decent follow up to Ride the Lightning.

Even the best artists can have a bad day.  I mean, WTF is up with Celtic Frost's "Cold Lake"?  Dude.  That makes no sense.

Funny how quickly this turned into a Metallica thread!  :laughing11:
I'm picking my battles too.

For example, Slayer. I consider it a sell out when any band records the same album 63 times. :hello2:

Is it bad that the first thing that popped into my head when I read "Black Album" was that part in Spinal Tap rather than Metallica?
