The federal government declares a public health emergency, as the number of cases of swine flu in the U.S. rises to 20.

I saw that, and they've had at least one case in my county, which of course is close to Mexico, where the outbreak started.

This federal emergency is way overreported... from the article...

The U.S. government declared a public health emergency -- a step Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said "sounds more severe than really it is."

"This is standard operating procedure and allows us to free up federal state and local agencies and their resources for prevention and mitigation," she said.

And

At a White House news conference Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the emergency declaration is standard procedure -- citing that one was declared for the inauguration and for recent flooding.

I really feel like this is the "SARS" scare all over again, where this horrible pandemic was supposed to happen and never really did...

Yeah, we'll see. I am happy to see the government being proactive and sending that vaccine-type stuff to affected states. Hopefully it'll not end up as a major catastrophe and governments will get good practice at prepping for pandemic disease when it does come. I think almost 100 people have died already in Mexico, so this is probably already worse than bird flu.

If bird flu was 'just the flu' then yeah sure. "Spanish flu" wiped out more people in 1919 than all of world war 1 did before that - maybe 100 million people. So it's not necessarily trivial.

Perhaps it was genetically created by the Illuminati to curb the world's population to a more manageable, self-sustainable number.  Oh...I've said too much.

I heard it spread to the other side of the pond, if you include spain.

The odd thing is, if you follow the mortality statistics, of 100 dead out of 1800 infections in Mexico, this means that at least one American should be dead.  Yet none are. I'm not worried about it.

I went to Hong Kong during SARS times and it was great.  The hotels were cheap, restaurant service was great, the stores empty.  Maybe a trip to Mexico City might be fun.

We have better health care than Mexico.  A lot of Mexicans don't have access to any health care at all.  For Americans, the flu means a trip to the hospital at worst, in most cases.  Not all Mexicans have that option.

oh my.

zoom out a bit.. and make sure you see what the colors mean.. it isn't all bad but it isn't that good it seems.

it sounds scary and I have to admit it freaked me out a little when I first read about this,... but what I want to know is, why would this Flu kill more than a regular flu? as far as I know, there is no cure for regular flu, and I usually sit it out without dying when I have it.
I guess a lot of people already die from regular flu, but I suppose these are already not in best health.
the symptoms of this swine variety sound exactly the same. also, the US cases have been mild so far. so I wonder if this is more related to the availability of good healthcare in Mexico..

I think this flu is slightly more severe than the normal kind, but it's still not like ebola or anything.  :p  Influenza does kill a lot of people every year, but not so much in highly developed countries like the US... again thanks to modern medicine.

Oh modern medicine.. which I love like a woman...

speaking of.. jerk modern medicine stole my gall bladder.  :evil4:  :dontknow:

+1.  Exactly.  Just sounds like the Flu to me, except it isn't flu season.  Damn media.

I just got off the phone with my "baby mama", she's all freaked by the whole thing and wanting to formulate an emergency plan for when, when, it gets worse and we need to "run to the hills".  Eight years ago she bought 1000 pounds worth of "end of the world food" thats packed in such a way that it lasts for decades, she's been waiting for a chance to use it.

I'm so glad I have custody of the kids.

Is it gonna get worse?  Probably.  Will it cause global chaos?  Probably not.
