The Cyclocaster project!

Something I like to do when I build now is, well, exactly what I want.
It may take some extra time to get the money, or to get things exactly like I want, but having a guitar that's *exactly* how I wanted it to be is a huge reward.
You are absolutely right, no doubt about that, but i simply don't have a preference about it. It just has to be a bridge compatible with jaguar's vibrato that works well for the use i'm going to do with it. I don't care whether it's a mastery or  a tune o matic, i'll get the one that costs the least and works well enough for my standards, in this case, a roller bridge. Of course there are things that matter to me, i wouldn't get cheap pickups just to get the thing finished ASAP, but i'm not going to spend 150 $ for a bridge that serves exactly the same purpose a 60 $ bridge does. Given that even Mastery bridges don't have rolling saddles or fix the radius issue.

Edit: Given that i'm going to use normal mustang knobs (the big ones on jazz basses) would normal split shaft pots like this http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=170703080727 work? or should i get something else? Like long shaft or solid shaft?
I guess you missed the edit  :)
Really important issue. And a stupidly simple  one too i guess, once you had your fair deal of experience with pots, which i still haven't had  :(
And should i worry about the price/quality? Or the story goes the same as with caps?

Oh well  :)
I bought 2 CTS 500k audio taper pots (it says genuine USA... but i've got some doubts about that), 6 feet of braided Gibson-style cloth wire (enough for a couple projects), some rosin core solder with 2% flux in it) and a jack socket.
So with the knobs, a cap, 3 switches and the metal plates all the electronics are done.
What do you think about CTS pots?

CTS pots aren't the best, but they're better than most and are what everybody uses because to get better you have to spend substantially more money. For instance, these Clarostat parts are superior...

Clarostat%2053C_t.jpg

But, they're $13/ea. + shipping. Plus, they aren't quite as user-friendly in a guitar application because the turning torque is higher, and for those who still solder to the backs of pots, the stainless housings prevent that.

On the plus side, they're sealed so they don't get dirty (no more noisy or open pots), and they tend to last forever.

Sorry for the crappy quality, the line here sucks monkey bawls...
I've got all the hardware, now for the pickups and bridge.
I'll give you some update as soon as i got everything i need to work on it.
What do you think about it?

If only that top were book matched, oh what a nice canvas for some transparent finish.  :headbang1:

Transparent finish.... with a competition stripe up the middle to hide the seam?

Nope  :icon_biggrin:
Sorry to disappoint ya, but it'll be solid, white chocolate-looking Vintage White, with a perloid red pickguard in duo sonic style, cut on the jack plate, pretty much like this

Allright i've got almost everything i need to actually start working on the project, bridge and saddles got here today, paint will be shipped tomorrow, pickups should be delivered in a couple of days and i've got all the electronics for a while now. I'll start uploading photos as soon as i actually start to work on it.
I was thinking though: how do i determine where to place bridge holes? It's a TOM style bridge. I can get roughly the distance from nut to bridge calculating the diapason lenght but what about vertical allining?

Hey it has been a while though the guitar is almost done  :) i was going to upload some photos of the works when i realized i lost the fu**in usb cable of my reflex. I'm gonna post them as soon as i find it (or as soon as i buy another cable  :icon_scratch:).
It's a matter of days though. Just sanded the filler, tomorrow i'll spray the first coat of primer. I'm excited to see this project completed. I guess next one will be an acoustic  :toothy10: then maybe some drums perhaps...

I sprayed the white primer today. I guess it came out decently for a first attempt, alltough it has that orange peel effect on some spots and in other little spots i didn't distend the filler well enough. I guess i'll need to sand my ass off now  :laughing7:
Any tips about the finishing lacquer? It's mat. Does it need any sanding, ecc?

Allright guys, i got myself a new cable.
So here we go, gonna upload a few photos cause my line here doesn't let me do much. Wiring is the only thing i got to do to finish this now. Can't see the time i'll hear this thing play.
So this is how the body looked when routed.

And here is the body painted and finished. The color was a bit darker than i expexted, and it was a troubled process, but i like this darker shade the same. It's almost cream

I guess I didn't really understand what the end result was going to be based on the earlier descriptions - it makes a lot more sense now that I'm seeing the nearly done pics.

This guitar is awesome-on-a-stick, dipped in beer batter and deep fried to a golden crispy perfection of musicalitude.  :icon_thumright:

Glad to see you diggin it man  :) Doing the wiring job right now. Maybe i'm a little bit self-centered, but could this ever be GOTM material? I know i know... No exotic woods... No transparent fancy finish showing her woody graces off... Still  :icon_biggrin:
Too bad i have no idea if i could even partecipate right now  :laughing7:
Speak your mind everyone! I'm anxious to know what you think about her (don't bash it too hard please  :icon_biggrin: the paint is still fresh)

It's really cool to see that in the face of a fair bit of scepticism and doubt from the forum, you pushed on through and have achieved something totally awesome.

I don't see why it shouldn't be eligible for GOTM if the restrictions match.
