The amigarobbo effect

Does anybody else get this, or is it just me?

There are some finishes and some body styles that I just don't like - it's all just personal preference, right? But, every now and then an example appears that I not only like, but like A LOT.

Finish-wise Caribbean burst is a good example, just doesn't (didn't) do it for me. Since reaching this conclusion, there have been several gorgeous examples featured on the forum - see Heywood's November GOTM entry for one.

Nearly pulled the trigger on this one myself a while back - anybody that's seen my builds will know this isn't my usual fayre.

Body styles, fairly obviously my example is the Dinky P. Same again, the shape just didn't work for me. Along comes amigarobbo's fabulous fuchsia flake fretless and my preconceptions are in tatters.

Anyway, even if it is just me, henceforth this effect will be known as the amigarobbo effect.

I consciously try to not listen to my preconceptions and remain open to things I supposedly won't like. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised.

I've contemplated this phenomena many times. Every so often, someone manages to take something that I hate, and flip it around into something of extraordinary appeal. A good example would be Bagman's Quty Pie. Normally, I am not a fan of Teles, purple-to-clear bursts, quilted maple under clear, zebra coils, wenge as a fretboard material, cream dots, or guitars with backsides that are not finished to match the paint job on the front. Somehow, however, Bagman has managed to combine every one of these things into one of the most fantastic guitars that I have ever seen! I just don't understand how all of the things that I normally dislike can come together into something truly stunning.

I guess my theory is that when you don't like something, there is bound to be a guitar out there that uses it in a different way, so that the result is unique. In other words, when you find an exception to your distaste for a particular thing, that guitar is going to be the only guitar of its kind. The novelty and originality is a breath of fresh air, that adds to the appeal.

It's not just you. There are loads of guitars that get posted on here, where I say to myself oh that's different or I might not have thought of that.

I even reminded myself that I'm not keen on Jazzmasters or Jaguars, but I've seen a lot that folks have built where I can appreciate them. Frown's is one that springs to mind.

I think Line6man hit the nail on the head.  Sometimes things just come together in ways that are pleasantly surprising!  Of course, we also hav eour triggers.  For me, a major part of it is woods, and also certain hardware:  I'm a sucker for Black Korina and Bigsby-style trems.  My biggest hang-ups are really angular bodies, and pointy headstocks, but...someone posted a black korina V-style guitar with P-90s, and well....I couldn't bring myself to say "No" to that thing!
