Here is where I'm starting with this baby; the color sample board. This will give you a good idea of the steps I will be using to finish Bart's guitar.

In the first picture the wood has two wash coats of lacquer. In the next picture I put McFadden’s clear paste filler on the wood to stop the wood from sucking up finish like a sponge and to fill some of the funny end grain that Spalt has. Notice that there is very little color change in the third picture after the filler has been wiped off which is why I'm using clear. Regular paste filler would have colored the wood and I don't want that.

Spalt is pretty tricky to finish...Mine was only my 2nd DIY, and I almost bit off more than I could chew.... :doh:

Now we are at beautiful golden amber. You can see the original color of the unfinished wood to the left.  This is ready for a few coats of clear and then the burst color.  Again pictures do not do it justice I love this stuff.

Thanks Bart, it's even more spectacular in person and slightly more amberish. The epoxy I used has no UV protection, so it turned a bit amber from letting it sit in sunlight a few hours a day. Yours is in the process of becoming quite the spectacle too...
