Probably a silly question: Is the usual tuning of a multi-scale guitar any different from a typical 6 string?

Same tuning, just better use of scale/string length and intonation across chord structures.

But the number one reason,

IT LOOKS FRICKIN COOL!!! :headbang1:

Wow this just looks straight awesome. Like sooo awesome. I really want a fanned fret guitar.

The fan seems pretty large, but I'm sure you know what your doing.

Did you say that body was originally a Warmoth? Or did that idea get nixed? Seems like there was a lot of work put into it if it was a W.

I dunno if it's the usual way to go with fanned fret guits, but the op said:

it's being built for tuning FCGDAE (low to high).

which seems to make sense .... though that's not necessarily the case with fanned fret instruments.  Dingwall basses, for example, are specifically designed to have the ideal scale length for regular bass tunings (ie - 37" for low B, 34" for low E, etc).  I don't know of any players of fanned fret guitars that don't have some alternate tuning, but I'm far from an expert.  Plus, even if I knew for a fact that no such player existed and made such a fact known, I'm sure at least one fanned fret guitar player would try it & love it.  :laughing7:

Care to drop some knowledge on the fanned fret trends, Philosopher?
Well, I have mixed news. Warmoth said they weren't able to rout what I needed and by the time I had purchased a finished body and gave it to my local guy to complete the routing and such it'd cost almost as much as I would spend for a full-blown custom.

So that's what is happening, Aaron at Black Water Guitars is building this as a complete custom for me for about $200 over what it'd cost to go Warmoth+routing locally.
Tosin Abasi, Bulb, and Chris Letchford are some of the biggest names using fanned fret guitars. Strandberg (both his customs and his Boden collaboration with Strictly 7) is a big name in build fanned fret guitars as is Oni (his work even has some experiments with exponential curved fretting-it's pretty nice stuff) and Rick Toone.

Agile produces some of the cheapest fanned fret instruments you can get your hands on, and they're pretty cool for the most part. This fan is so extreme for the tuning I'm using requires wildly varied string gauges on a single scale instrument, but other people get fanned instruments because it's far more ergonomic because of the natural bend of the wrist as you move up and down the board and go with 24-25.5" or 25.5-27" fans on 6 or even 7 string guitars. These don't provide much benefit for tension, but allow for the ergonomic benefits.

Here's a link to a 4.5" fan on a 9 string: http://www.sevenstring.org/forum/extended-range-guitars/212159-vik-guitars-domineer-ff9-ngd.html

My fan is about .1"/string different from his guitar.

Whoooops :tard:

Nothing to see here....well other than an awesome tele.

An update - now featuring Evo fretwire instead of nickel (I had the builder refret it):

I'm thoroughly confused as well :dontknow:. This isn't a Warmoth build; it started out that way, but was going to be too difficult/costly for me to finish up starting with a Warmoth body. Aaron at BWGC is building this custom.
