Did 6 coats of black dye, which colour should I use for the transparent paint on top?  ???

Tough question, you may need to experiment a little bit and be prepared to sand back; based on the target picture I'd try starting with an amber colored toner, might need to go darker, like a light mahogany toner shade to get the effect you're trying to get....
