Stain under sanding/sealer followed by dye

As mentioned in my earlier post, I have a Saga LP incoming.  One thought for finishing the back (besides the black paint I mentioned), would be to do a "trick" black-red effect.  Has anyone tried or have thoughts about the following:

1.  Grain fill

2.  Use an ebony stain

3.  Apply sealer/sander

4.  Wipe on an alcohol based deep red dye

5.  Top coat with wipe on poly? (unless another coat of sealer is first required)

Thx

p.s.  If the concept is considered to be good, any tips as to the order of applications would be appreciated

Not going to work that way; if you apply sealer then the body can't take any additional dye. You need to apply all stains/dyes prior to sealing/top finishes

Therein lies my confusion.  Reranch specifically talks about applying an alcohol based dye over the sander/sealer.

In any case, by goals are the following:

1.  get the color I want

2. Have a very smooth surface once the project is complete.

3.  Use the wipe on poly for my top/finish coats.

As the wood is basswood/maple, do I even need a sander/sealer coat once the stain and dye have been applied?  The Minwax site says that the stain will seal the wood and does not recommend the sander/sealer except over unstained wood.

The bottom line is that there appears to be a lot of conflicting info out there...
