Before he starts the song, he subtley undoes the strap, it goes over his left arm and in front of his stomach. He plays with the strap over his left arm and in front of him then whips it behind him for the solo.

Believe it or not, Stevie actually goofed a bit. He hid it because he's such a good showman. When he undoes the strap and initially starts playing behind him, he tries to put the strap back on the button and misses it. At the beginning of the solo, it is still unbuttoned and is buttoned later. At about 8:40, when he whips it back in front for a bit, this is how my guitar player starts the song. He was (and really still is) quite the Stevie worshipper. I tease him all the time that I remember when Stevie died but he had to learn about it as he was 2 years old at the time! He got a Warmoth neck for his Strat with a Pao Ferro fretboard, like the SRV sig model. He has a black guard and white pickups a la Stevie, his Strap was made by the same guys that made Stevie's, and for the picture below, we're playing Texas Flood.
