Hey - how does he whip the guitar behind him like that in a performance situation?

Always looking for new tricks,

Mayfly

Before he starts the song, he subtley undoes the strap, it goes over his left arm and in front of his stomach.  He plays with the strap over his left arm and in front of him then whips it behind him for the solo.

i tried it, its not too hard but very uncomfortable to play

I like the Stevie method myself. (7:30)

Believe it or not, Stevie actually goofed a bit.  He hid it because he's such a good showman.  When he undoes the strap and initially starts playing behind him, he tries to put the strap back on the button and misses it.  At the beginning of the solo, it is still unbuttoned and is buttoned later.  At about 8:40, when he whips it back in front for a bit, this is how my guitar player starts the song.  He was (and really still is) quite the Stevie worshipper.  I tease him all the time that I remember when Stevie died but he had to learn about it as he was 2 years old at the time!  He got a Warmoth neck for his Strat with a Pao Ferro fretboard, like the SRV sig model.  He has a black guard and white pickups a la Stevie, his Strap was made by the same guys that made Stevie's, and for the picture below, we're playing Texas Flood.

nah he didn't goof it up, look closely at 7:41 and 8:20 pause it if you have to. the strap is hooked and wrapped around the back of the guitar the whole time it is just difficult to see at 7:41 when it is moving because of the lighting and video quality.

stevie was a great showman and if he goofed up you might not notice but i think even the great SRV would have a little trouble with those double stop bends and rapid fire licks if he had to hold the guitar at that angle with just his fretting hand supporting the weight of the guitar from the neck.

I still don't understand the whole hype around SRV... I mean, I do respect him as a great blues guitarist, and he has great tone, and I do enjoy listening to him every now and then..but other than that, I don't get it.

I do notice that the big SRV fans are usually also the ones that like to say that guitarists like Yngwie and Vai are one trick ponies.. while on the other hand, Blues is ehm... not just one trick??

I am very familiar with SRV's stuff, but am hardly a fanboi, especially when compared to my guitar player.  I appreciate Vai and Satch, but am not fans and don't consider them one trick ponies.  I'm just not a big fan of blimity blamity doinkity 2 handed tapping guitar riffs and solos.  Eric Johnson and Andy Timmons are the virtuosos I'm more into because of what they don't play.

Eh, i neglected doing this since i'm not an "elite" member here or anything, but eh, might as well, i like the forum  :icon_thumright:
