conventional wisdom seems to endorse low/mid output pickups for es-335 semi-hollow kinda guitar - like gibson 57s or sd slash alnicos etc.

but i also see some references to sd phatcat as a choice for semi-hollows as well. aren't p90s or their humbucker cased clones like the phatcat high output pickups?

how will they sound on a semi hollow?

The folks over at Hamer went to Duncan and worked together with them on the PhatCat pickup for one of their Newport series semi-hollow (like a 335).  The pickup was designed expressly for that situation.  I've got 'em in one of my ES-333's and brotha... its a hell of a pickup in that guitar.  I call it the "musical" pickup.  You get everything from jangly 60's tones to heavy tones.  The stock values on the volume and tone controls are perfect, and you get a wide range of distinctly different tones with the rotation of the tone knob, not just bright, semi mud, and mud.  Very very pleasing.

A thousand thumbs up.

They sound totally different in a Strat

=cb=, thanks for the input. i have been for long looking for a pickup swap on my old mij washburn hb35. i might go for the phatcat based on your positive endorsement. thanks again.

I've got a set of phatcats in a solid-body LPS, and I agree with CB's description of them as "musical pickups." They are capable of a wide range of tones, and they tend to have a great, throaty snarl to them. I can just imagine what they'd sound like in a hollow-body...
