Roasted Swamp Ash Tele

I got the roasted swamp ash body from Warmoth showcase, neck and other from here and there, with Hip Shot locking tuners and Fender Pure Vintage '51 pickup set. This is the first time I solder the wires from scratch with a four way switch using Fralin's wiring diagram. The body's just oil finish.

The problem I am having now is that the bridge pickup is not... picking up. The neck position is working, so maybe something came loose. I will take a look again when I get more time.

I checked the wiring and it looked fine, and bridge pickup worked when I put everything back. But days later it stopped again. Also, I get humming when I turn volume up, but it disappears when I touch the control plate. I am guessing there's a grounding issue?

Speaking of grounding, I ran a wire from tone pot back to under the bridge plate. Is this how it's done with telecaster? I am asking because there was not a hole pre-drilled for this, where other Warmoth bodies I got had it.

Yes, effectively a ground from the control cavity to the bridge pickup rout and then under the Tele bridge plate. Or to the shielding if you have it and then like the below picture is how I tend to do them.

That looks neat and tidy without drilling a hole from the body diagonally into the PUP cavity. Are you grounded to the volume pot or tone pot, I suppose if continuous it wouldn’t matter? I have a new build I’m attempting with a Warmoth tele body and dual humbuckers, and just trying to my ideas straight for wiring and grounding.

I ran the ground wire from the switch, neck pickup cover (for 4 way switch), and output jack to the volume pot, then a jumper wire to tone pot. Bridge pickup ground goes to the tone pot, and from there to the bridge.

I am thinking the ground wire to the bridge might not be contacting properly. That would explain the noise disappearing when I touch the control plate, and why sometimes the bridge pickup would work. I vaguely remember somebody said that chrome plating should be sanded off where it touches the ground wire. Gonna take another look when I get the time.

"We do this not because it is easy, but because we though it would be easy."

Thanks, it is about ten years ago I put that Tele together, but I think to the back of the volume pot. If the ground is continuous, which it needs to be, then it could connect to whichever spot is convenient. The build thread for that Tele is below.

Went through your Tele build, thanks for the link. I'm building an Ash Tele, with a roasted Ash cap that I plan to finish natural with satin poly on the body and Tru Oil maple neck. Really appreciate your journaling the build, if mine can come out half as nice I'll be pleased.
