Rhythm & Groove

Awesome photos as always!  Though it looks more like Lead than Rhythm to me...

Is that bass a Warmoth?

No it's the Cort gb94 - it's what I started trying out this style of photograph with - think that's the better of the two myself.

Yeah I think so too... I like how it's in focus at one point around the 19th fret and the picture is swirled around that.

How did you do this anyway... just move the guitar while you take a picture with a long exposure?

It's not too hard to do to be honest. What's needed is:

  • A camera that can be focused and have the exposure set manually
  • A tripod
  • A table lamp
  • Some form of wireless trigger for the camera, or the self-timer would do
  • And a guitar obviously

All I did was stick the camera on the tripod, pre-focus on roughly where I'd be standing/sitting, set a wide aperture (f2 in my case), use a longish shutter speed (1/4 sec on both these) and then trigger the camera using the wireless. Depending on how bright your table lamp is, you may wish to do a bit of trial and error on the exposure settings till you get something that gives you a usable image.

The bass shot was one of 45 I took - the trigger was under the ball of my thumb behind the neck (I wasn't really playing it). With the Braveheart shot, the trigger was under my big toe and ended up being the last of 62 shots (and I was playing it this time, though the tuning was a bit out).

The actual Photoshop work was pretty much constrained to the B+W conversion, a bit of added contrast, resize for the internet and add the border. It didn't even get cropped in any way.

It was good fun trying to get these and there's a good chance I'll give it a go with some of the other guitars at some point.

Thanks for your guide in taking the pics.

With Photoshop, what height, width and resolution did you set to resize so they appear full frame on the computer monitor when one opens this post ?  Usually, most pictures posted here are compressed to thumbnails which have to be downloaded to get a bigger view.

Well I host on flickr, then use the IMG tags. My basic resize is 800px on the longest side - don't worry about the resolution side of things too much.

Nice pics!

Thanks for the tips.  Ill have to get my hands on a wireless trigger.  I have a feeling that depressing the shutter button is causing most of my focus issues.

Don't go getting anything special, mine is just a cheap Chinese thing off eBay, nothing more.
