Removing Chrome From Brass Knobs

Cagey said:
In my searches for methods to remove chrome, I found that many chrome plated parts are nickel plated to start with, so it might just be a matter of removing the chrome and re-polishing what's left. But, I also found that a lot of chemicals that will dissolve chrome will also dissolve aluminum. Not sure why. I don't suppose it matters. Based on my experiences here, I'd be real anxious about plating removal, especially on pricey parts.
Nickel and copper are used in the process of chroming, and I've found copper is more widely used on cheaper parts and is probably just a few microns thick. So most likely it will come off as well as the chrome....

I've wrecked a few neck plates.... :laughing7:

Brass looks cool  :icon_thumright:

:icon_scratch:  So what colour mount and pup screws you gunna use now ? ....... Can Doug make them too  :icon_jokercolor:

If the gold ones don't look right, then black. The body's gonna be black, as will the Graphtech saddles, so it might make a nice accent.

Oh yeah I forgot about the black bargain bin one, black and brass is ok don't think the gold screws is gunna match. May-be  :dontknow:
I was still thinking of the cherry bomb one.

Yeah, I don't know what to do with that black cherry part. Damn thing doesn't fit my aesthetic sense so it's got to go, but I've never even gotten any use out of it and I'm already gonna take a beating on it.

Hmm. I actually used to know a way to dissolve plating, but it was an electrolytic thing involving a car battery - you run a charge to the knob, your "wash" is connected to the other terminal, and blooey! But now I can't find it and it seemed really dangerous anyway. There was a guy on the Steel Guitar forum who was trying to sell off a big stash of original Mighty Mite brass parts for the 70's, but he wanted like $20 per knob. Want me track?
