Hey, Guys!

After 16 years of playing the guitfiddle and owning everything from Gibson's to Fender's to Jackson's to Carvin's to Wolfgang's, I have come to the conclusion that if I'm going to get what I want,
I will have to build it myself...

So I have decided to build a Warmoth dual humbucker Jassmaster out of Mahogany or basswod(haven't decided yet) with a quilt top, birdseye neck & fretboard with a Floyd!

I was just wondering if any one else has built something similar??? And if so how did it turn out???

Also, can anyone tell me about Warmoth's finishing details IE: nut and frets!

Thank you!

Hey welcome to the board, I've built a dual humbucker strat, with a floyd, its great stuff, very easy to put together, plays great. About the nut and frets, the nut can be prepped by them for the floyd, and should be, just make sure you choose the right one for your floyd, different ones have diff heights,, if its a maple fretboard, they finish over the frets, that will wear off after playing for a bit, couple weeks for most of the frets, fret sizes are described on the website, i got the gibson 6130 style, feel pretty good. no need to have a fret job done out of the box but some people do anyway. Hope that helps you out.

Welcome to the boards!

Most have had very good experiences with the frets right out of the box.  The ends aren't dressed (and in most peoples opinions don't need to be), but that's setup work.

Also, a lot of people liked the floyd nut shelf as received.  Some others found it to be too high for their liking and had to file it down.

What kind of finish and pickups do you have planned?

Mahogany, not basswood. Please. A transparent finish on mahogany looks much nicer. And it's stronger than basswood. I think it sounds better, but that may just be because I dislike basswood, or did you already notice?

I've never had to adjust the nut height of the 3 Warmoth necks I have with the Floyd nuts, though I prefer them a bit stiff.

The fretwork on my Warmoths has never been anything but exceptional. I know that they are not always perfect for everyone, but in my own experience, not a problem at all.

elgravos built a rear-routed double HB Jazzmaster.  You can see more pics of it in his thread here: http://www.unofficialwarmoth.com/index.php?topic=3009.0

Here's a pic from that thread to give you quick idea.

I have always "had" to dress the fret ends, but I practice a lot (six hours is a bad day) and I play sweaty bar gigs where the soft white underbelly of my fingers gets soft & moist, and sharp fret ends slice 'em up. If you don't play much they're fine. It's pretty simple to do - I prefer the fully "hot-dog radius" fret ends, but you can get by with just removing the wire-hair edge. It's a tiny amount of material to remove, like a .003" radius or something - I use a 10x jeweler's loupe, and GO SLOW.

I plan on having a pro setup, I just want to make sure their fret work is good!

No biggie as long as it's to high... Won't be the first I've had to file!

I am leaning towards the blue family( I am going to do it my self... so I'll cross that bridge when I get there!)... As far as  pups, DiMarzio Tone Zone in the bridge and PAF pro in the neck if I go with a basswood... I am thinking Duncan 59's if I go with a Mahogany!
I really haven't decide exactly what tone I'm wanting as I literally play every type of music you can think of and I am treating this guitar as a prototype for future builds,  if I find warmoth's quality up to par... If not then I will continue to chase down the tones in my head with other projects.

Thank You!

I had a Custom Shop Fat Strat that had the worst setup I have ever seen, I took it in to get setup and the tech told me that it would be a lot cheaper and easier just to send it back to Corona, which I did... After waiting an additional six weeks and with no delivery date in the forcible future, I went out and bought a G&L strat and put my own pups in it... Fender finally sent me the guitar( after a total of 9 weeks) and I quickly sold it on ebay!  The off the rack G&L with Lace Sensor pups I put in it, could out play that Custom Shop pile any day of the week!

Man, 2 hours a day for me is a Great day... Are you trying to give Vai a run for his money..LOL
I used to practice a lot more, but sadly I decide it was a good idea to move in with my girlfriend...
She doesn't share my passion for music and complains with even the suggestion that I go down to the basement to play for awhile... I still occasionally play a gig with the boys. but those a far and in between!

I say Jazzmasters are awesome! My next W build (after the 2 that are on their way already) will be a blue jazzmaster.

I'm not a big flloyd fan.. but good pick vs. the jass master trem. what a piece of junk.

With higher output pups, I have found that in a basswood body they are much easier to control.
I dig mahogany as well, I just prefer them with low to mid output pups for that classic tone!
as far as finish goes, I will be doing it my self and spraying the back black!

Yes basswood is soft wood, but tonally it almost offers the best of mahogany(sustain) and alder(brightness)  at least to my ears!

Plus, basswood saves your shoulder any where from 2 to 5 pounds... Just don't drop it...LOL

When my guitar students ask for "the" secret - the single one that's going to propel them to inevitable stardom - I always tell 'em to put the TV in the garage and put their amp in the living room....
well you can't say I didn't try....  :occasion14:

I don't even have the damn thing hooked to the wall anymore, all it plays is concert & instructional DVD's. It's amazing how less nervous life is without all those Hollywood people yelling at me all the time... Say, did they ever find Britney's missing underpants? :dontknow:

I feel ya!
They definitely aren't for everyone... I have them on most of my guitars and rarely if ever uses the actual Trem, I use them for the simple reason that they keep my guitar in tune!
I know it's an extreme way to go, but it works for me.

just to let you know the paf pro is the shiz, i have one in my strat, best neck pup ive ever had in any guitar
I agree, I have one in my Dixon LP copy(first guitar) and one in my Wolfgang plain top special(main guitar) with an original super distortion in the bridge... Good God I love that thing!
They are the most expressive neck pups I have ever played!

You have guitar students? I thought the end of newbies came when Guitar Center started selling Guitar Hero and Fender, Slash, Aerosmith and countless others started endorsing it...

I guess I will never understand why some one would want to play a game when they could use all that
built up excitement to actually learn to play the real thing...JMO!
