So, what's the difference between having the speakers mounted inside the cab to the back of the baffle, or front-loaded onto the baffle? Any thoughts/scientific data/opinions from anyone?

i would venture to guess that you would want them front mounted on a sealed cab and rear mounted on one with fender style grill cloth on the front both for easy access.

Yeah, I can see the easy-access reasons, but does it affect the tone either way?

not that I could tell from any of my experiments.  The thickness/material of the baffle board makes much more of a difference.

Compressed/sealed cabs need front mounted speakers according to montage praxis reasons. For rear opened or bass reflex/vented cabs - no different.
