If I order a Soloist body made of alder, will it already be sanded for paint, or is more sanding required?...

They come sanded to at least #220; I'd resand it to #320 or #400 prior to painting, unless doing something that requires primering

For a really smooth finish, you might even use 1000 grit and wet sand.

At least go over it with 0000 steel wool.

It arrives fairly smooth, but for most that is just a starting point.

I wouldn't ever wet sand raw wood especially if there is glue holding the wood pieces together. And if you sand it too smooth finish won't stick well to it.

True.

This is what I did with my oil finish. Wet sanding raised the grain slightly and made sanding more efficient. I instantly wiped off the water with a paper towel. My body is solid.

I got the surface glass smooth and roughed it up slightly with 0000 steel wool. It is stunning so far. I have 4 coats on it (light steel wool between coats) and you can almost shave in the reflection from it.
I'm really pleased...

Most of what I have learned, I learned from this forum.  The advice here is next to none.
