PSA on the CT LP

2 words bro: CT VIP.  :guitarplayer2:

It's funny, but since I'm not a big fan of the LP shape due to the balance issues I've always had with it, this was the first thing that I thought as well. I think the weight, construction, wood and tone would be so close between the two that I'd prefer a VIP anyway just because it's a shape I could get comfortable with.

Don't get me wrong, I play guitar because of great guitar players who's main axe was the LP, and I have one and it sounds great. A very curvy, very beautiful body shape. But for some reason, my Heritage LP is just not nearly as comfortable as my new CT VIP or my old strats. Maybe I'm just not beautiful enough... :icon_scratch:

I'm sure that's true for a lotta people. The LP body style is iconic - it's a "gotta have" guitar - but it's not conducive to comfortable full-range play for several reasons. Some will fight the good fight and use them anyway; I know I buy one every once in a while out of lust. But, if one is purely objective, there's no contest between one of those and a Strat/VIP/Soloist or any guitar with that body style. So, I always end up selling my LPs 6 months after I get them.

Hey Cagey, what do you think of this beauty?

Also, are LP's able to go Baritone?
And could the LP shape be expanded, oversized if you will, with "more to love" to accommodate the lap and be more comfortable?

That's a fine-looking guitar. Very attractive.

The Warmoth units can easily be built baritone. It's just a matter of buying a baritone neck.

The L5S is sorta that. Looks like a Les Paul with an addiction to lasagna and donuts...

But, it's not available as a carved-top, if that's what you're looking for. If you like the idea of an over-sized carved-top Les Paul, you might want want to consider a carved-top Tele...

They'll route or re-route those pickup cavities to accept any pickup you'd like at no charge. You can also re-arrange the controls a bit - put the pickup selector in the upper bout like an LP, and angle/space the Vol/Tone controls so they're a little more convenient. Most of what makes a Tele look goofy to some is the pickguard/control plate design, but if you do the rear route as shown above, you don't have to buy into that aesthetic.

This is precisely what Buckethead's Gibsons are. Oversized and a longer scale. Lacuna Coil also use ESP Eclipse single cut guitars that are 27" scale and slightly bigger in the body, though they're actually thinner than a Gibson LP. Schecter also make several baritone single cut designs.

Having several LPs, and a carved top Warmoth Tele, I'd say they're not quite as replacable as that. In fact, that goes for VIPs, mahogany Strats and everything else. A Les Paul sounds like a Les Paul because it's a big piece of mahogany, a big piece of maple, some more mahogany and rosewood and it's all glued together with a helluva lot of wood around the neck join. When you start changing that you quickly deviate from the typical LP tone. Just look at the Gibson LP Axcess, all they did was take away some of the wood at the hell and a little wood in the back and the damn things sound like an SG or Explorer, not like an LP.

The LP being a carved top, also has an increased break angle over the saddles that adds to some of its tone, as well as the break angle on the tilt back headstock.

On their own, may not be large contributors, but combined, they certainly can influence the tonal signature.

This: +1. It seems like all of my original heroes had LPs, but with EVH, Dave Murray, Randy Rhodes (the polka dot V) and SRV that all changed.

I look through the showcase and always fall for one or two LPs, but have been able to bring myself back from the brink with the thought that I'll have to sell it to fund something else that I will actually use. Enter the VIP. So my latest obsession has been with carved top, maple cap, VIP 7-string. Throw some ESPs in there and that's a winner. It's just not something that I see that I could do with an LP to be honest.

How many people come to W for the exact same reason I did? They want some kinda mahogish 24.75ish mean ole monster sporting either humbuckers or p90's but don't want (pick one or all)
angled neck
TOM/STP
47 lb guitar that has curves in the wrong place
guitar that can be played seated (if you try to play a Les Paul while seated, the body will drag the ground, since most people play them around their knees)
a guitar that balances with the 12th fret where it's supposed to, instead of 2 or 3 frets too far out.
a guitar that balances for that matter
guitar that costs 4.2 bazillion dollars that doesn't meet the quality of $600 imports
weird interactive as all gitout switching/tone/volume layout

I had that same thought, but then figured my desires may be different than his.

*sigh *

You girls, er I mean folks got nothing else to talk about?

Howabout you practice a bit.  I'm gonna learn this song tonight - guitar and vocals:

Now there's a guitar that puts the LP CT to shame!  :headbang:

My brain is so fried I can barely remember 2 measures much less an entire song.
But that is a pretty cool song though
