Post What Metal You are Listening To

Had to bring this one up again for nostalgia's sake. As a 13-year-old awkward gawky nerd with the unfortunate Asian bowl haircut who was desperate to break out of the Asian stereotypes applied by both society in general as well as my parents, this rendition spoke to me in ways I didn't quite understand at the time.

But Transformers. And metal.

I listen to it now at 52 years old after I had just put my own 13-year-old son to bed, and that chugging riff is still pretty righteous, even 39 years later.

I don't remember what my original hang-up about Jinjer was, but I re-listened recently and ... dang. All I can remember from years ago was "yeah, they're not my thing." And I honestly don't recall why anymore. Tatiana's ability to seamlessly flip between clean & harsh is reminiscent of Alissa White-Gluz to me since I'm a big Arch Enemy fan. However, Jinjer's instrumentation sounds more technical and prog than Arch Enemy with the few Jinjer songs I've listened to already. I'm sure I'll get a much more thorough exposure soon, as I've bought their debut LP from 11 years ago and will be adding to the collection over time to catch up.

I liken this to how I didn't feel in-tune with Sepultura's "Roots" when they first released it, but decades later, fell in love with it. I think at the time "Roots" was released, I wasn't mature enough in my metal journey for it. I was expecting more "Beneath the Remains," "Arise," & "Chaos AD" and just wasn't ready for the more groove/death direction "Roots" was. Retrospectively, I'm also surprised at myself for not latching onto the more indigenous-inspired tracks given my affinity for various cultural folk/indigenous music.

Yet the funny part of all of this was that Sepultura was "too heavy" for many of my other metal friends in the early/mid-'90s. They grew up on Dio, Sabbath, Priest, and Maiden and that's where they were comfortable. I pushed the envelope and ended up walking by myself most times. They liked Testament, but when I played "The Gathering" for them, one of them visibly cringed at the fact that it wasn't a rehash of PWYP or SOB.

Yet, here's this guy who was one of the biggest Def Leppard fans throughout childhood (still am, really) skipping merrily into Metallica, Testament, and Slayer, and then into the darker realms beyond where my other metal peers had stopped.

Good times. 🤘 :ROFLMAO:

This tune came on the radio while I was driving last night, and I was instantly captivated

...mostly by the happy, sing-song-y chorus, and the goofy "la la la la la" interjections. Both seemed conspicuously atypical of modern metal...and a welcome respite. If you had told me it was Mr. Bungle I would have believed it.

Turned out to be System Of A Down. I may need to check out more of their stuff.

Hell yes, SOAD!

It was MTV-X back in the early '00s that was my intro to them. "Sugar" off of their debut album just completely blew me away. That was at a time when metal was surging back after a decade of pompous, self-righteous "alt rock" that had morphed out of grunge as by then, grunge had gotten too self-indulgent. This was just before the term "nu metal" came into being and used as a pejorative. SOAD, Static-X, Coal Chamber. It was an amazing time to be a metalhead.....

....unless one was among those who were still grumpy that "new metal" was nothing like the Dio/Sabbath/Maiden that they were hoping for. When I started describing SOAD as true progressive metal for a new era, I got lambasted frequently by those who'd fallen into the rut of "progressive = Dream Theater clone."

(thus, the very antithesis of the word "progressive")

Without warning one night out at karaoke, I surprised my group by selecting "Sugar." I don't have good harsh vocal technique so I did damn near blow out my throat, but the reaction from my wife was priceless as I switched between clean and harsh and all the changes in the song. I came back to the table and she's staring at me like "what the hell was THAT!!" (in a good way).
