Poss EVH Project

You have never seen that pic before?
Its been around for decades now.
It was a photo shoot in a guitar magazine if I remember rightly.
EVH put Kramer necks on all his guitars mainly cos they were free and mainly cos he was involved business wise with the Kramer company so he was advertising.

He's not saying that that didn't exist, just that he's never seen Eddie holding or playing it.  Gotta agree.  I'm not a big EVH fan or historian, so no pride loss if wrong.  The few google image searches I did did not yield a hockey stick head on that guitar.  He had plenty of hockey sticks rear-routes and hockey stick Frankenstrat repros, but all had a subtle detail missing, like no quarter on the bridge or something.

Is it possible Eddie is a marketing genius?  He has been the main source of dis or mis-information about his own gear.  Has had endorsements from different companies to play their stuff only to keep playing the same thing as well as similary different guitars floating around.  This is not the 1st or last discussion like this, meanwhile his name is still out there occupying band width.

Wow! Lots of discussion.

As my build has already been "picked apart piece by piece"...it would be most wise to realize that by microanalyzing the guitar I am piecing together...you are really wasting your time & energy and appear a bit desparate in the attempt to do so.

Obviously this is not a "replica" but a fun build, as pointed out by someone as "in the style of" rather than an attempt to replicate any one of EVH's Guitars precisely. Seriously, what's with the "correctness"/"power struggles" over who is "right"...take a deep breath...relax...enjoy...I am.

Got the "5150 **" Stickers off.

Need a Chrome OFR Arm, Chrome String Retainer, Neck Single Coil, probably going to go "sans" pickup ring, find a black covered Duncan or DiMarzio Single Coil for the neck and use a V/3Way/TBX Set up since the holes are already there for the controls.

We quit discussing your guitar 2 pages ago.  Just kidding.  You're right though and way to bring it around.  I didn't see all the chatter as nitpicking, rather this is how we discuss our hobby.  We build for details, and thus we discuss (stupid) details at length.  That's why we're all here.  No harm intended, and certainly nothing negative is meant towards you, your thread, or guitar.

Thanks STDC. I understand, as I'm on a couple of forums pretty frequently. It's such a waste of time to argue the fine points of an EVH if it's not being claimed as a "true replica".

There are quite a few of EVH's Guitars w/various striped paint jobs (ex: http://www.vintagekramer.com/5150f.htm ) , a million homebrew replicas and variations galore out there. Not what I had intended to become the center of the thread I suppose but...I'm done...rant off.  :hello2:

That is a different guitar again.
That is what is called the 'Kramer Ad Frankie'

Totally different paintjob.

Yep, that's not the original. but he's holding something very similar. In fact I have that poster in my garage, it's been there so long I don't even look at it anymore, duh.....

As far as picking apart the op's guitar, not at all, it looks great, some of us, me , got off on a tangent, all about Eddie, and not the OP. Sorry....

The red one in my profile photo is pretty close. That's a real Boogie Bodies neck from the same era, and the same specs as Ed's Boogie Bodies necks. He was using those long before any involvment with Kramer.

Like you say, this thread wasn't originally a "What did Ed really play?" topic. I like the project guitar, accurate or not.

Still have to pick up some Chrome Parts; Floyd Screw Posts, Nut Lock Blocks & Bolts, String Retainer, Collared Trem Arm...as well as a Single Coil for the Neck Pickup Slot (SD APS-1N) and some electronics; Vol/3 Way Toggle/TBX. It's going to require adding some wood to the Humbucker Cavity to allow for a "Direct Mount" of the DiMarzio Proto F HB w/o a Pickup Ring...but I'm liking the outcome thus far!  :headbang:

Definitely go with no humbucker ring..Adding the wood to the pocket is pretty easy, you can go to home depot or any hardware store and get some maple or oak trim. Cut to fit the end routes and glue them in. I've done it many times, most of my guitars I build I direct mount to the body...... :icon_thumright:

Not wanting to hijack here. Dan, do you have any advice on the best way to direct mount pickups to wood?

I will also be doing this soon for my carved top tele, and would like to know the best way. I was thinking of using the original himbucker springs with wood screws. Also thinking of place some mousepad foam underneath them so they aren't so wobbly. Is there a better way to do this?    :icon_thumright:

Yip, that is basically what I do, after filling the end routes with wood. I get some long wood screws and some dense foam, and use the long humbucker springs for height adjustment..And it's best if you pre drill the mounting holes and run the screws into the holes first to cut the threads in the holes, it makes mounting them much easier... :icon_thumright:

Cool, thanks for the info. The body I have ordered is setup for Woodmount humbuckers, so i shouldn't have to worry about filling the end routes.

Cool deal, that's always a plus... :icon_thumright:

I'll have to direct mount the HB w/some foam padding under the pickup and use the wood screws, springs and glued in wood pieces. Def looks way cooler. Almost got all the parts I need to assemble - grabbed a SD APS-1N Single Coil today......waiting on a Collared Arm and Chrome Floyd Screw In Posts.

Van Halen - You really got me.

Scariest bit is at 44 seconds when David Lee Roth turns around, and you realize he is wearing arse-less pants. WTF?    :icon_scratch:

I have made spacers from wood or used small metal tubing. I don't use springs; I go for a solid mount. It sounds awesome!
