so we are trying to finish up Luke's strat, and while this is probable the 5th 'true oil project' I have worked on, I have never done one with a flame maple top.

Now the Korina Back is turning out just like the previous projects: nice, even shiny coat. However, the maple top doesn't seem to absorb or dry the oil the same way. a bit more uneven and a little strikey, so it needs a bit more steelwool rubbing to get it nice and even.

the problem is that In order to get it right, I have to take the gloss off completely, and can't seem to get it (semi) glossy anymore.
does anybody have any suggestion on which polishing compound to use to get it somewhat glossy again, and to rub out those tiny 0000 steelwool scratches? (they can only be seen in a certain light, so not that big of a deal)

If I remember correctly, Tru Oil is kind of soft.  At least for a while.  If that is the case, any polish should work well.  The harder it gets the more fine grit sanding you end up doing, but for something really soft, like wax, you just use a cloth and a lot of elbow grease.  For Tru Oil, I'd probably get some car polish, Turtle Wax Polish in the States, and rub it out from there.  Takes time and your shoulder probably will tell you about it, but it should look good.

If it's a new finish, just try buffing it with a soft cloth.  Less old, then I agree with the polish.
