I am contemplating buying a set of PWATLTs.  My question is I have a Licensed Floyd Rose floating
tremolo system on my guitar, would it be wise to just use this without the locking nut?  Or use it with
the locking nut is best??    :icon_scratch:    Probably a no brainer I would just like to know.

Apart from the convenience of the PW's nipping the string for you, using locking tuners and a locking nut is kind of a belt-and-suspenders approach.  If you have one, you tend not to really need the other.  But if you are a maniac dive-bomber with the Floyd, the locking nut will provide greater security if you're concerned about the strings slipping out of the nut-slots.  This is more true for the headstock shapes that don't provide straight-line string paths (Jackson, KWS, etc.)

If I absolutely HAD to have a Floyd (hey, it could happen!) I would go with a tilt-back Fender-style headstock (with no need for string trees) and a slippery nut (or even a roller nut), with locking tuners.  But I'm not a heavy twang-bar abuser.  YMMV.

Good luck!

If I wanted to go this way, I would want Schaller locking pegs. The PW's feel flimsy to me. Wanna buy some cheap? :icon_thumright:

My limited experience with Planet Waves trim-locks has left me less than impressed. I was suspect of the design to begin with, and experience bore out my suspicions. The string-trimming feature is subject to rapid deterioration, and may not work well right from the start. I've only used about 4 sets, but unless somebody twists my arm, those will be the last of them.

I'm a huge fan of locking tuners, and wouldn't have a guitar without them. But, I'll always use the Schallers or Sperzels. They do it right. Gotoh, Grover, Kluson et al make them as well, but they're also-rans. They're not worthy of your money.

The string trimming function of the PW parts is a gimmick. If you're lucky enough to get a set that work, it's unlikely they'll work for long. It's a nice idea, but to do it right would make them cost far too much for them to ever sell.

Think about it. You're asking them to cut nickel-coated tensilized steel. Unless the posts and the cutters are made of something much harder and to very exacting tolerances, how long do you suppose they're going to last? If you play a lot, you might be changing strings once a week, perhaps more. How often would you like to change tuners?

Uh - back to assumptions again  :sad1: Internet people

I've got PW tuners on all my guitars and they work fine. Let's say they would stop cutting the strings one day - they would still work just as any normal locking tuner.

No, not assumptions. First-person experience.

But, you're right - even if they don't cut the strings, they're still lockers, which beat the hell out of the old friction-style pegs.

No assumptions, experience. I won $250 of Planet Waves/D'Addario goop from a Guitar Player contest once (hint: enter contests) and they goofed and sent me a double order. I was detained in Mozambique at the time (my sideline as as international jewel thief), and was unable to return the excess... So I had 24 of the buggers, put 7 on a 7-string, sold 7, now I have 10 left. And, Schallers and Sperzels to actually put on guitars. I think they might be breeding in there though, at night they make tiny little crunching noises... jewel thieving isn't what it once was, wanna buy 10 PW's?  ??? and maybe some little ones....
