Actually, I'm surprised it took them this long. "Free" means ad-supported, but there wasn't any practical way get ad revenue from the bulk of their bandwidth usage, which I'm sure came as a result of embedded linking. The only place to show ads was to subscribers who only used the site long enough to upload pictures. Not enough clicks there for the volume. Either that, or they're just plain greedy.

Indeed, I don't think anyone minds some advertising to help finance a service. It did get out of hand in recent years with the ads.

If they had managed things a bit better more people might have been happy to subscribe.
