P90 mounting question

I have a LPS on the way which is routed for Humbuckers but would like to install P90s in there, are there mounting rings or covers available to suit this arangement or is it going to look odd?.  Thanks.

Several manufacturers like Seymour Duncan, Rio Grande and others make P90s in a HB form factor; that's the route you'll have to go if the body's already been HB routed.

Thanks, I have already bought the P90s and the body is also on the way, its already routed for HB, looks like I will have to rethink my plan.

you "can" get a p90 in a HB route... but.... you need to alter it, and, you'll have extra clearance on both sides...

as suggested, there are HB sized "p90" types, but they're not really P90 toned... then again, P90's vary all over the place.

My own suggestion would be something like a Phat Cat in the neck, and a P94 (Gibson) at the bridge...

The Phats are a good pickup on mahogany necked guitars, giving clear bright, yet fat tones... similar to the low windings of the P90 that Gibson used on guitars like the ES125 and ES330.  The P94 is a a screamer, but retains good brightness on the bridge position.  Its loud and fat, and the phat cat in the neck would balance nicely with it.

Thanks CB, what kind of alterations are needed to the P90s to ge it to fit in the HB rout, I think I would try this first.  The body that I have coming is a hollow Mahogany LPS, and the neck is Rosewod/Ebony,  so I might go with the Phat cat & P94 if the other option does not work out too well.

You have to rework the routing of the HB cavity... opening up the "recess" aras where the ears of the HB go.  I've seen it look "ok" on LPs but... also - be aware - that its a tricky thing to pull off and have look good, as your routing and mounting must be spot on.  You get about a 1/8 gap on the front and back of the mounting, and ya just have to live with it.

The far better way to go... P90 "type" HB size pickups.  There are lots of tasty flavors.

as mentioned seymour duncan makes hum sized p-90's as do other major companies but if you can wait bill lawrence makes them too. i think there are many versions of them voiced diferently and the web site isn't very good so you'll have to call.  Tel: 951-371-1494 Toll-Free: 877-647-2651, i tried to email them but got no reply at all, i hope you have better luck

keep in mind the Lawrence ones fit in standard routes, but have non standard rings.....
