Obscure music you want everyone to hear.

I woke up this morning, quite unearthed, and I opened my computer, listened to some music, and for some strange reason I started listening to this song after having heard a phrase in the movie '500 days of summer' (crappy shitty horrible movie, only because its so recognisable!):

Just saw this in the first post and had something to add.

I first saw the Good Rats live in 1979 and became an instant fan (they opened for Rush). In 1983 I started taking guitar lessons again because the former lead guitarist, John "the Cat" Gatto, started teaching at a local music store I frequented.

I left Long Island long ago, but I know they still play reunion shows there sometimes.

I was going to add "Good Rats" to this list, but I was glad to see it was already there.

I think that Mike Peters is one of the most underrated singers of the last 30 years.
he was (still is) the singer for The Alarm, who are unfortunately mostly remembered because of their hair, rather than their music.
before he reformed the alarm, he also had a solo career, and formed Coloursound with Billy Duffy and some other ex cult ex sisters of mercy members.. they were fantastic!

I like obscure music.  Almost everything I listen to these days is at least fairly obscure.  A short list:  Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Ef, The F@#$ing Champs, Aethenor, Yndi Halda, Compulsive Gamblers, Six Organs of Addmittance, OM, Earthless.  I could also go through the decades from the twenties to the present and relate obscure stuff that by rights everyone should know, but I will not.
 
Last week I flew to Tokyo from Hong Kong to see Shakalabbits. It was worth every penny (yen?). They put on an ungodly good show. Check youtube for 'Shakalabbits live.'

Eddie Hazel's 'Jams from the Heart' is an obscure record, but not an obscure artist.

Outside the UK and Japan, The Wildhearts have remained criminally and undeservedly obscure.

I bought a record once of a band called The Fly on a Taiwanese label called Mud Rock. Imagine Frank Zappa meets a Chinese street gang.

I liked a lot of the Bill Laswell/Axiom label stuff, like Arcana's Arc of the Testimony, Material, Praxis, etc.

Oh my God, I love the Shakkalabbits! But I live in Canada, so i've never heard anyone else talk about them...  :icon_thumright:
 
apart from the tele virtuosos i have never heard of any of the other bands you guys are talking about.

but i wish nick drake, mick rogers from manfred mann and barclay james harvest were more popular in the usa.

Interesting that Elbow came up. Thought there first album had some good tracks and they had tonnes of potential. The B-sides from that era are awesome, but for me they just never got their stuff together and took it further. Much like how Doves went, as well.

Best album I've heard in the last 12 months is Wintersleep's Welcome to the Night Sky.  The Canadians are really doing some of the best Indy around atm.

Don Caballero, Clockhammer, Slint, Dirty Three, Barkmarket, Bettie Serveert, Arcwelder, Failure, Quicksand.

Kind of stuck in the early 90's, but so there was so much good music going on then.  I loved Nirvana, but they destroyed the indie rock scene forever.

Some guys I knew were in a band called Love Cup, who I still think were great.  They were from Champaign, IL, where Hum were from, and sounded kind of like them, but better.

I listened to Logh's "Yellow lights mean slow down not speed up" a lot a few years ago. They come from around here (south of Sweden) if I remember correctly.

Edit: Ah yes, Lund and Malmö. I used to live in Lund and now live in Malmö. Small world!
