New ignore feature?

I'm confused; does triggering the "Ignore" button stop you from viewing ANY post by the OP, or just the thread in which you click the "Ignore" button?

It typically applies to a particular member, not a thread.

Nobody's asking you to ignore anybody. If you don't, the feature means nothing. You'll still see everything. The "ignore" feature is personal, and is encoded in your cookies. It's a way for people to make themselves more comfortable, not to inflict their attitudes on you.

I understand, but I believe that the "ignore" function could have negative side effects. Anyways, I think this is an adult-populated forum. Do we really need an "ignore" button?

The only danger, which is nearly non-existent, is that a new member might think he's being ignored because many established forums are slow to adopt new members.

Especially if said new member is an experienced member; we don't need to lose those kinds.

There's a certain xenophobia which exists and a certain "Guitar/Amp Law" which is followed
that can easily alienate both n00bs and experienced dudes.

Few non-n00bs stick it out and hang around (you, I for ex.).  Even then sometimes you gotta "kick 'em in the balls"
to hold your position.   :icon_biggrin:

Yes. I try to be inoffensive, but you never know what will trip someone's trigger. Written words aren't always indicative of attitude, though, so you can offend without realizing it. A great deal of communication takes place with body language and vocal inflection, which you don't get on a forum. That's where emoticons can come in handy, or simply being very explicit about what you say. Even then, some people can take offense simply from what you do or don't believe in.

Exactly.

It's like the mods got together and said: "These nutcases are so childish and immature about things without us stepping in to moderate that we'll give them a childish and immature "ignore" button so they can block out people they don't like."

FWIW, I think that if you are going to ignore a person, it should be publicly listed in your profile that you are ignoring them.
Who knows who's going to be ignoring who. :dontknow:

Not all "adults" are mature. "We" may not need an "ignore" button, but some people do. There are those who simply cannot tolerate hearing/reading something they don't agree with, or something said by somebody that they don't share a world view or philosophy with. For instance, if you happened to be Jewish or Muslim, there are those who, if they knew it, would think you couldn't form a coherent thought to save your life and wouldn't want to hear a word you said. Others might dismiss you if you thought Gibson had a decent business model. On and on.

It's not that the mods are dismissing us - quite the opposite. They're empowering us to customize our user experience so we can make ourselves happy. Otherwise, what could they do? If somebody decides they don't like hearing what so-and-so has to say, should they beseech the mods to ban that user? How do the mods then make a decision? One user doesn't like another so they should deprive the entire forum, who may enjoy that user's participation, of that user's input? Forum wouldn't last long, I'll guarantee you that much.

As for listing who's unhappy with who, what possible good could come of that? None. You're begging for battle lines, there. The whole purpose of the "ignore" feature is to eliminate battles, not start them.

I got you beat by one...   :icon_jokercolor:

I'm gonna test this out for the hell of it - there's really only 2 peeps I don't care
to hear (and no, one ain't AprioriMark - those were just "love taps" heh)... "you"
have to be an especial  self-serving " :tard: " on a consistent, continual basis
for me to completely dismiss ya.

It makes it difficult to follow what's going on because you're only seeing one side of a conversation.

Well - that is really the key to the problem in the first case.  :laughing7:

Here's a thought for everyone griping about the ignore function: ignore it!  :icon_jokercolor:

Seriously though, I think the people who want it/need it will use it, and everyone else will eventually forget about it. So why the debate?

I think it would be good to know who is ignoring you that way you could PM them and find out why. Then they could PM you back and tell you why they don't like you and could reply by telling them they are stupid and they could respond by telling you to shut up and you can tell them no you shut up and then they could tell you to shut up first and then you could say.............Nevermind

Oh yeah, finally I can stop Cagey from ruining my internet experience! He's been nothing but trouble every time I put forth the effort to read a post instead of skipping over it. :icon_jokercolor:
I'm ignoring him on the secret account that I use to cheat on GoTM polls too. :blob7:

Pfft. With a statement like that, you're going on my friend list, and I'm buying you a beer.
