New ignore feature?

So what happens if I someone quotes something that was posted by a person you are ignoring?
Does the quote get ignored too?
What if someone you are ignoring posts a thread, and others respond to it?
Will the whole thread be blocked?

I don't use this forum software anywhere, so I'm not sure how it behaves. But, with the stuff I'm familiar with, if you quote somebody who's ignored, the quote shows up. If someone you're ignoring starts a thread, you won't see what they posted, but you'll see the responses of people you're not ignoring.

That's the downside of the "ignore" function. It makes it difficult to follow what's going on because you're only seeing one side of a conversation. You can't tell what's going on. That's why it eventually falls out of use.

the ignore thing doesn't really work for me because the "unignore" and "show" links are right there.

I kind of like karma points better... but really neither are needed, IMO.

No, there's no indication. The only thing you might notice is that nobody responds to you, but even that's not definitive. Not everything requires a response. If somebody just likes spouting off to see their words in print, they could go on for weeks without a clue.

I can't imagine why anyone would ignore you. You haven't said anything controversial, attacked anyone or any sacred truth, or disagreed with any dogma. Except... well... there's that string length thing... <grin>

The only danger, which is nearly non-existent, is that a new member might think he's being ignored because many established forums are slow to adopt new members. I know I probably posted a couple hundred times before I got consistent indications anybody was reading anything I wrote. I sometimes suspect there are still some who would rather I dried up. But, I'm a persistent little bugger. Some folks aren't, and a forum that doesn't make new members feel welcome becomes inbred real fast, and stagnates. That's no good for anybody. You need fresh blood all the time because there's a certain amount of attrition that thins the ranks of contributors.

Nobody's asking you to ignore anybody. If you don't, the feature means nothing. You'll still see everything. The "ignore" feature is personal, and is encoded in your cookies. It's a way for people to make themselves more comfortable, not to inflict their attitudes on you.

I'm confused; does triggering the "Ignore" button stop you from viewing ANY post by the OP, or just the thread in which you click the "Ignore" button?

Especially if said new member is an experienced member; we don't need to lose those kinds.

There's a certain xenophobia which exists and a certain "Guitar/Amp Law" which is followed
that can easily alienate both n00bs and experienced dudes.

Few non-n00bs stick it out and hang around (you, I for ex.).  Even then sometimes you gotta "kick 'em in the balls"
to hold your position.   :icon_biggrin:
