My LP Classic came (used) with EMG 81/85, and I thought they'd be too modern, but after switching out some PAFs, some Duncans and even some humbers size P-90s, the EMGs are the most "Les Paul" sounding pickups, and nowhere near as harsh or sterile as I'd thought. They're downright smooth through my Super.

+1 to that comment
I have EMGs in all my guitars now, and that's after trying out tons of other pickups and always going back to EMG's.
I have an 81/81/85 in a 3 pick up les paul and they are very big bottomed and boomy just like the stock pick ups only they have more richness and overtones and are way easier to get pinch harmonics with.
I also have them in a few different Schecter c-1's that I own and they sound totaly different for each guitar.
The theory that EMGs make all guitars sound like they are the same is BS imo.
