What size drill bit do i need for schaller style tuner mounting holes. Not the actual tuner holes but the little screw holes next to them ? the tuning machine has 3 little i's on it does that mean 3mm ?

I always use a 1/16" bit. Also, BE SURE TO WAX YOUR SCREWS! If you don't, you stand a very good chance of breaking them off in the hole, which forces you to invent all sorts of new cuss words and disparaging phrases.

They don't actually have screws they have a single pin mount i need the hole for that pin mount ! am i right in thinking 1/16 is pretty much 1.5mm ?

1/16 is 1.587. Save this in a folder for future reference...

Schallers with a locator pin? Are you sure they aren't Sperzels? If they're Sperzels, the locator pin is .102" in diameter, so you'll want a 7/64" (2.7781mm) bit.

There definitely schallers. I asked stew mac for measurements because they sell them swell was told 0.96 and to use a 3/32 drill bit. Ive got a 2.1mm  2.2mm and a 2.3mm drill bit so I'm going to try the 2.3mm in scrap first and see how it fits then if its all good use it to drill the headstock. But i know what there measurements are like :/

Any ideas on how to mark where i want to drill because the tuner doesn't fit flush to the headstock because the pin is in the way ?

The jig Mr. Player suggested is probably the best route, although because of the cost you might want to consider if you're ever going to use it again before you invest in it.

Check the package the tuners came in. It may come with a template.

You can also use a small engineer's rule/scale to locate the pin on the tuner body, then use those dimensions to mark the neck.

I think I mentioned this in a reply to another one of your posts. Get some calipers, you'l thank me later.

With calipers you would have been able to measure the size of the pin yourself and not take a chance that someone unintentionally gives you wrong advice.

You don't have to spend a lot

I have these: http://www.amazon.com/General-Tools-1433-Fraction-Fractional/dp/B002RHP7SE/ref=sr_1_13?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1337207215&sr=1-13

and they are plenty accurate for measurements like this.

But do a search on calipers at Amazon and see what else they have. You could probably get better for the price of the plastic ones I linked to. Just make sure it has fraction read out.

Cagey, I have 'import' Schallers from GFS on one of my guitars and they have locating pins instead of screws.
