Hi, I'm just about to start finishing a neck in tru oil and I've got a couple of questions.
I was wondering how I'd go about using steel wool to finish the fret board without killing
the frets? (Its a maple board)
And my second question is....on the bottle of tru oil it says, and I quote "This product
contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects
or other reproductive harm" What precautions should I take when using it? Is the danger
from ingestion, inhalation, just touching the stuff? how dangerous is it? I've never seen this
mentioned before, any advise would be much appriciated.

You should be using extremely fine (#000 or #0000) steel wool and doing a light buff in between coats, so frets will be completely unaffected; you'll be posting again later wondering how to get the Tru-Oil off the frets themselves later - probably eadier to let it build up a little bit and scrape it all off when you're done finishing the neck.

As to the carcinogen label; I think everything in California save bags of Columbian Marching Powder has that label, don't sweat it. Don't drink the Tru-Oil and wash your hands after each application; there are no fumes to speak of. If paranoid, wear latex gloves when applying.

Thanks man, I was getting a little paranoid about it, I wasn't sure
how dangerous it was and I didn't want to be responsible for the
inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Since its inevitable, just go with the flow, enjoy the ride, shoot for the head.

I try not to get overly concerned with things "known [by] The State of California".  I suspect I would have to ware a label of that sort on my T-Shirts if I ever lived in that crazy place.

I saw a report recently that the CA Legislature is proposing a ban on water use by unaccompanied minors, as it's been reported that over exposure to water can lead to hydrophobia
