Mispositioned frets? (PICTURES!!!)

It's a neckthrough  :sad1:

Don't you think he could fill the slots in with some epoxy or something and make new slots? Would that work?

If that works I could think of actually getting the guitar and try it out before paying the rest, but I would definitely ask for a lower price because of the circumstances.

Otherwise I will try to get my pre-order money back.

My guess is it would be an obvious and unsightly fix, number one, and number two, that the amount the fret would have to move is small enough that there wouldn't be much wood between the two slots, so pressing/pounding in the new fret would break the wood left over between the two slots.

I think he's just going to have to write that one off as a bad job.

Yeah...  :sad1:  :(

Oh how I was looking forward to this...!!! And since I have no income besides a few occasional album sales (I live with my girlfriend haha) buying a guitar is a critical decision for me... It would cost about $1500 in total.

I guess I'm better off getting a bolt on Warmoth of the same thing for about $500 less.  :toothy11:

Yeah, you're paying him to build a guitar. If he builds it wrong, a repair is simply not a good enough solution. If he can't get the fretboard off and it's a neckthru, well then he needs to start again. It's all on him. If you're buying a custom built guitar then under absolutely no circumstances could it be argued that you should accept a substandard item. I would consider an item with a repair in it to be substandard. It needs to be perfect, because let's face it, if you went to one of his competitors then it would be. He has to deal with his own mistakes and your experience should be the same as if they never happened.

Mmmm... I'm eagerly waiting for a reply from him right now. Only a few days has passed but I cannot think about anything else!!! And now it's even worse, because I'm not expecting anything good out of this anymore...  :sad1:

Don't get too worked up yet. There's an old Arab saying: "Fear of death is worse than death itself." This could easily all work out well in the end.

This is getting a little weird. He has obviously updated his Facebook page with him making a thumbs up with the guitar nearly finished, but hasn't sent the picture (he was quick sending the pics of the unfinished) so I assume he's getting nervous about the guitar and that it's ruined by the fret mispositions.

Also... Isn't a neck through guitar a bit too heavy to hang in a single tuner hole? :icon_scratch:

Peg holes are safe to hang from.

The hang point isn't at the CG, so it's hanging off-center. That's why it looks crooked.

Best thing to do is just sit back and relax...  If the fret is mis-positioned I'm sure the maker will have the capacity to fix it.  That being said, the only fix I would accept is to have a new fret board installed.  No need in losing sleep about it.

No. Not if he's made the neck out of wood, at least. Wood = Good Stuff!

And we have just established that your assumptions are skewy - though it may just be a timing issue, our Grand Experts on Skewy Brainfarts have extensiv... never mind. You could stop drinking coffee in the morning (when you're brain's already getting all REEE-REEE-REEE) and only drink it at night to stay awake. And then drink your brandy in the morning (to squelch the brain-woddles) instead of at night because, your girlfriend says, "we never talk anymore!"

Though there may be... causati... umm. Well, there's always fine-tuning needed in every complex situation (ahem, ahem, cover-your-ass noises).

HELL WE'RE ALL GOING TO BE DEAD IN FIFTY YEARS, WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?

I know but getting a gutiar for almost $1500 is a big deal since I have no job and let my girlfriend pay for it :icon_biggrin:

Now I got mail back and he has adressed the problem and repositioned it using Epoxy.
It was apparently only one fret, and not many as I say it... I'm still a bit nervous about the whole thing...
I will get some pictures of it soon

:dontknow:  May-be he needs .......

Haha...  :tard:

Anyway, if he fixed that and it's playable, I'm ready to buy it but I will not pay the full price: he should be glad I'm even willing to pay for it at all. So what do you think... I payed about $550 in start cost, and that is 1/3 of full price.
So I think I'm not willing to pay more than 2/3 of full price. Material cost at max...

I mean this is is actually good for him if he sells it for material cost: he got his material payed, he can continue and will probably not make the mistake again.
AND, I will probably recommend his guitars to other people if it is any good. I will still point out that he made a mistake, but that he made up for it and that it now plays good. If it does, I haven't tried it out yet of course.

If I could see the slightest hint of the repair, I would not buy it at all.  After reviewing your post, you seem to have a keen eye for detail and are very focused on what you want (this is not a bad thing  :) I'm just saying.  If you think that you will be distracted by the repair and always looking to see if it is OK, I think you will probably never be happy with the guitar (I know I wouldn't).  You asked for a custom guitar and you have every right to expect a new instrument free from defect.

just my 2 cents worth.

Yeah I wouldn't buy it either. I can walk into any store and get a guitar without that kind of problem. That guitar is junk now; he needs to sell it separately, pointing out the repair. You should get what you paid for or a refund on everything.

From what I'm getting out this thread, the builder in question is unestablished and cuts the fret slots without a cnc machine. Yet, he is charging $1500, which is pretty high dollar if he is unestablished and is making a guitar with a high probability for human error.

I think there are plenty of better options for that kind of money. Also, don't let your anticipation cloud your judgement. A custom guitar is great, but is far less impressive if it has fundamental flaws.

Hmmm, I know I should go with what I think is best but this is a real hard decision.

I have other important issues to take care of, involving a lot of money I don't really have. So I guess the best thing is I cancel the order... But I still want it hahaha  I'm so stupid.
