I was going to suggest the same thing, but I think when you have strings as short as they'd need to be with a guitar neck, you wouldn't be able to get the tension low enough to work with a string gauge that would still be playable. Imagine lowering the low E string on your guitar an octave. It would just flop around like cooked spaghetti. You could increase the string thickness so you could use higher tensions, but even on long scale basses those strings are pretty thick. On a guitar scale, they probably would resemble rebar more than strings.
