Meanwhile, at Warmoth....Chechen necks have arrived!

I was going to suggest the same thing, but I think when you have strings as short as they'd need to be with a guitar neck, you wouldn't be able to get the tension low enough to work with a string gauge that would still be playable. Imagine lowering the low E string on your guitar an octave. It would just flop around like cooked spaghetti. You could increase the string thickness so you could use higher tensions, but even on long scale basses those strings are pretty thick. On a guitar scale, they probably would resemble rebar more than strings.

I've been thinking of trying a 13-56 set of flatwounds on my Tele for fun. It could be tuned B to B and work fine. You'd need a healthy cap on the tone control to get the more bassey tones. I have to refinish an old neck I have to put on it. It might work. Come warmer weather I'll see about that.

There are some fine looking necks in that batch.

I like the ebony filler strips. Should be an option more often :-)

Edit. grammar error.

Kala Silver Plated Roundwound U-bass strings

They're far less stretchy than the rubber strings. I think they may only reach to 23" or so though.  I have a five string set waiting to go on a build once my shop is in order.

Had a look around on the Warmoth site just now and there's only 21 chechen necks left out of the original 36 (according to Aaron in the video). 15 gone in a matter of hours! Amazing. :o

Yeah, man, I saw that build.  I just bought a Gold Tone Microbass, and haven't got it yet.  I posted about it in off topic, and someone brought up that build.  I think I want the rubbers strings, I want that quasi-upright tone.  But could be interesting with the plated strings.  Gold Tone has replacement plated strings as well, LaBella makes them.

I'm not surprised. Beautiful and unique parts. Wish I could afford one.

Welp, looks like I'm ou of luck for a bass neck.  :-\
Could you make an electric mini-bass?
Too adventurous for my blood.  Take a guitar neck and do a microbass?  Wooo.  Gives me the willys.
Could be interesting but I'm not sure what one would do to make it four strings, though. Could be a bit of a challenge. I'll give the 13-56 set a go on my Tele and be satisfied with more of a baritone sound.

The Showcase stuff is all already drilled for 6 tuners, but if you could get them to make you something fresh, you could ask that it not be drilled for tuners and do that yourself. After that, it's just a matter of fabbing a nut with the appropriate number of string slots.

That's a good way to look at it.

One of those necks would look outstanding with a solid color like sonic blue, alpine white, black, cream, etc.

That's what I was thinking. Suggestion was made that one of those would look great on Great Ape's latest treasure, but I disagree. You don't want anything drawing attention away from that body. Those necks are stars in their own right. They need to mate with more nondescript bodies.

Dang.

If it makes you feel any better, I know that people were scrambling yesterday, trying to find a way to make it work for you. Unfortunately the wood just wasn't there.

We have a precious few blanks left, that we held aside for the inevitable custom requests (and we did get several yesterday), but after seeing how well they are doing in the showcase we may just go ahead and process the rest of the wood and get them up for sale. So...there may end up being a few more in the showcase soon...but not many.

If you want something custom, the time to call is now.

Agreed.

You should either wear loud pants and a plain shirt, or plain pants and a loud shirt. If you're wearing both, well....then you're just Rodney Dangerfield.

For those interested some more information on this species.  Interestingly it does not grow in the area of Russia, where the Chechens come from.

Nah, it doesn't make me feel better to have people scrambling on my behalf.  Warmoth should be a low stress environment, as I can only assume that a lower stress environment produces better quality components.  I don't want to add to their stress level.  Although I much appreciate the effort.
